No other unit in all of 40K gives me more fits than Thunderwolf Calvary. Rather than sitting down and math-hammering a solution to them, Emerald Wolf and I are going to run several scenarios and see just how different units can counter them. They are a fast attack unit and I will set up fast attack units from Space Marines, Chaos Marines, Tau, Orks and Necrons and let these units duke it out. We're going to see how well they do when charging and charged. What wargear works and what doesn't. I'm not expecting things to go well for me, but we'll know for sure on Monday.

I think you'll find they stand up exceedingly well vs other fast attack units. If you want to really see how they work, run them against a hard counter such as 2 vindicators, grey knight paladins with halberds, or something similar. Moat fast attack is quick and light, but Tcav hits like a brick and is closer to an elites spot.

I'm thinking the best way to deal with them is have a mob of 30 shoota boys rapid fire into them, but they charge from outside the rapid fire distance so the likelihood of that is not good.

What are their points per model, toughness, saves, and wounds? Just curious.

All the stats are listed on the Games Workshop Space Wolves page under fast attack. By themselves, they aren't so much of a problem, it's when you add a Wolf Lord to the unit that the trouble starts.

They don't look much more dangerous than terminators\paladins besides the increased base strength and tougness. I'm assuming you can't kit them out with ap 2 weapons. I'm sure there are plenty of HQ's who rival a wolf lord.

You don't necessarily need AP 2 melee since the Thunderwolves have Rending and the reason why the Wolf Lord is nasty is because you get a 5 Strength/Toughness model with 3 Wounds, 6 Weapon Skill armed with a Power Weapon, +2 Saves/4+ Invul Saves, and Eternal Warrior is quite nasty, basically the 2 Wound Cavalry just help absorb wounds so the Lord can close in to tear something to pieces.

Also adding in meltabombs and plasma pistols can make them pretty nasty against anything. Good unit. You'll pay for it, but it's a good unit.
