The Best/The Worst

Post  AllmightyDM on Wed Jan 23, 2013 10:30 am

I'm interested in starting Warmachine and I've heard alot of great things about the system balance and the relative less cost in playing. Can someone who is well versed in it give me a run down of the best and worst aspects of the game? I'm trying to keep my wargaming balanced so I'm going to be selling off some 40k stuff that got nerfed in 6th to make room when I get a chance. Anyways, I'm interested in playing the bad guys, the monsters, and the boogeymen. I DM enough that I really enjoy that aspect, plus less people tend to play those, I'd be highly interested in an army that has dragons, beasts, goblins, and giants.

Thanks for the input.

The system is well written and runs smoothly. Only "downside" is the caster. Kill caster=win, and you cant buy custom wargear. Other than that, basdd on your description I would look into Legion of Everblight. Too much to type, but I can discuss a lot more in person

I've been watching some long unedited learn to play videos from miniwargaming and so far it looks like a solid game. I had started to look at the Cyrax (sp?) aka the necron/undead guys, but I'll take a look at the everblight. To the best of your knowledge are the horde armies in any way gimped in comparison to the others? Do they have a similar release schedule? Basically, if I get into this I don't want to start up an army that is the redheaded step child.

Edit: Yep... I'm pretty much sold on what the legion looks like. That's pretty sweet, now I'm just debating what I should do, buy the starter box or the two player starter box, which has the rulebook, more models, and another army that looks interesting.

This site has the cheapest prices I've found for most anything warmachine/hordes. Legion is like the Dark Eldar of the game. A real glass cannon feel and can run beast heavy because they have solos that can take fury off of beasts that are running hot on fury so they don't go nuts on your next turn.

Focus vs Fury is Focus management vs. Risk management. People whine about Hordes alot, but every time you knock out a beast there goes that amount of fury you can generate a turn plus the animus which is a spell attached to the beast. So usually Hordes armies will have more beasts than the Warmachine army it's facing has less warjacks. Usually 1-2 unless using Jack marshals. Warmachine casters don't have to worry cause their spells are in built usually more powerful/longer range and their focus returns every turn.

If I walk into a warmachine/hordes tournament I'm not going to be shot in the foot if I'm playing hordes though right?

Ie. there's alot of 40k armies that don't see much use in tournaments for one reason or another.

Edit: Ok watched some matches and it looks fairly balanced from a casual observation.

You won't. Both games has the same mechanics the only difference is Warbeasts vs Warjacks and Warlocks vs. Warcaster rules in the game.

Legion is pretty cool if you get the first strike against the opponent I have a battlebox plus Typhon, Angelius, 2 shepards, 2 forsaken, and the warlock Absylonia. Shepards and forsaken can take fury away from your warbeasts helping you manage fury better.

Look man I have cryx, legion, khador, menoth, retribution, and troll battleboxes if you want to try anything. I'll be bringing them all down on the 16th for the Gautier game thing next month. If you want to try the cryx and Legion out before buying just to get the feel of them.

to put it bluntly this game will make you realize how poorly written the Warhammer rules are.hordes and Warmachine are usually extremely balance between the 2.

T I Estes with regular updates, errata, and a yearly tourney system (steamroller) makes the game great. There is no real downsidebbetween choosing focus o r fury when it comes to army selection. I often play hordes and live how I can crank it up to 11 by running my beasts super hot and putting out way more damage than should be expected. Focus is great too, I love my menoth and mercenaries (dwarves) especially. The more you play the more you'll fin your style, and the great thing about the game is that it really tailors to all sorts of play styles. Each caster brings a unique feel to a faction and the combos are endless on what you can run with each h. I run a brick with fat beasts, and kiting hit fast and run list, attrition, gun lines, jamming lists and scenario ones. The game is good.hands down my favorite system.

Thanks guys, I ended up getting a copy of the hordes rulebook and the Everblight book so now I can study up on the finer points. Would you guys recommend buying a "faction deck" early on? So far my plan is to pick up the starter set, a set of templates, and the cards.

Anyways, thanks for all the help!

If you have a smart phone or table get warroom and the corresponding faction deck. It's easier, quicker, and will automatically update with new releases. When you buy models they will come with the corresponding unit cards, but the faction decks online are slightly out of date [2010ish]

Yea, every model you buy will come with the rules needed to play. 99% of the time you don't need to drag around the army book. Me and armchair will be having some larger battles on the 16 I believe if you want to see tournament style play.

I'll definitely check it out. I'm going to go ahead and order the starter set and I might have time to get in a small game if the pathfinder game is going slowly.

Also another thing if your missing a part of your model you can e-mail privateer press's missing item site and they'll mail it to you for free. I know I linked it to this site for mouser when he said his colossal was missing something.

I suggest you get clear sleeves for the stat cards of some kind. I use hard sleeves so the dry erase marker can mark damage and what not.

Also something about war room... I personally don't really like it and rather have the cards on hand. Because from watching other people that have it. It takes a while for it to load. So to me it's faster and easier to have the cards.

Just a personal preference for me I'd rather have cards but I'll definitely grab some hard sleeves.

I just put in an order for some basic models, paint, and the templates. I tend to jump into things, lol.

Here's a list of my models:

Stinger Warbeast
Spawning Vessel and Acolyths
Raek Light Warbeast
Lylyth, Herald of Everblight Warlock
Carniviean Heavy Warbeast
4 Shredder Lesser Warbeasts

I'll figure out what to do with them soon, the Acolyths just looked cool and I saw a video where a guy used a Raek to good effect.

Lylyths real power comes from her ability to attach a spell to her shot which is amazing considering her range on the spells is short and her shooting range is 12 inches. Plus once she hits a target the beasts can charge it without being forced. She can buy another shot. That all helps her low fury of 5.

Raek used with warlock absylonia putting playing god on it is amusing. Raeks can infiltrate the rear of an army and double handed throw the caster or warlock out to the open and cause it to be knocked down for assassination run from another beast you have lined up.

Spawning vessels are neat for throwing out another beast, but are kinda slow compaired to the speed of the rest of the army. I've never really wanted to buy one before personally. Heard their good to run for one of the Thagrosh tier lists...

I suggest you get a couple of shepards or forsaken to help you out on the fury management. Those two are staples in most lists for everblight because then you can run your beasts hot and take the fury off of them so you don't go through all the frenzies. At first I didn't believe I needed any of them, but once I used them I was amazed at the amount of forcing output I could do in a turn. Plus the shepards healing the beasts help a bit too and they extend the range you can force the beasts outside your control area.
