Pathfinder Team 5 of the Dense Environment Contingent Commune Data Journal

Entry 1:
To conserve time and resources, I, Shas'la Sa'cea Voda have volunteered to take on the duties of filling out the Data Reports, as my comrades have specialized weapons to maintain.

On our first expedition to uncolonized worlds, our mission was one of stealth. However, when we arrived, we found a minimal amount of resistance on these planets and took it upon ourselves to remove any such opposition. What we encountered appeared to be different bands of the Imperium of Man.

On our first hostile encounter as a team, we found what we believed was a grey colored Space Marine squad. If my memory serves me, they call themselves ‘Grey Nights’. With a squad as large as theirs, they outnumbered us nearly 3 to 1. Shas’la Istrazivac suggested we employ the Mont’ka tactics and ambush them from a different position than where they spotted us, but as the pilot of our Devilfish, I disagreed when I surveyed the low lying land. We immediately disembarked and engaged the squad while they were still establishing a secure zone. However, when I scanned the surrounding area after our initial volley of fire, I spotted one of these Nights behind us with a rather large weapon pointed at us, a wall of fire hit us, and myself and Shas’la Hrcak took serious injuries. When we came to inside the Devilfish later, Shas’la Drzak informed us that after the Grey Nights returned fire on us, that he alone had to pilot the Devilfish after he dragged us inside, he followed the ways of the Mont’ka and managed to widdle the opposition to nothing before tending to us. I have learned a lesson on this. Reconnaissance of the area before engaging is crucial to staying alive when serving the Greater Good.

Our second encounter proved to be less painful when we encountered a small unit of Space Marines riding giant wolves. We had found a tall ruin, many stories high and sought to use this location to further our exploration. After checking the area as quietly as we could, we engaged from the far side of the building from these ‘Space Wolves’, however when we approached, their wolves caught the scent of our ion discharge and they quickly took to the cover of the building. One of their riders sought to encircle us though, and we engaged him as quickly as we could. We disembarked and let out a volley of fire, with only a return whimper from the beast. He quickly joined the rest of his unit. Without a clear line of sight on the opposition, we gathered back onto the Devilfish, and quickly approached from another angle, this proved to give us a clear line of sight and we brought down the great wounded beast. With the rest of the unit still crowding behind the ruin, we approached a strange item on the ground, but when we got there, the wolves disbursed from hiding and 2 of them seemed to gather around another mystery. Realizing then what the Wolves were doing behind the building, I sent the Devilfish on remote, and brought their sensors into my HUD. I sent the Devilfish as quickly as I could to analyze this artifact that the 2 Wolves went for, and then I would send it behind the building when the analysis was complete. I attempted to use my Markerlight on the Wolves to give my comrades a better shot, but my weapon appeared to be malfunctioning. Luckily, my comrades had better luck with their weapons and took another beast down. After the lone wolf pounced on the oncoming Devilfish, the sensors were malfunctioning from the severe damage. I had faith in my comrades that they could kill this wolf, and sent the Devilfish to maybe scare off the last Space Wolf that was hiding behind the building. My faith confirmed, the last wolf in the open fell dead on its comrade. When the Devilfish arrived to the coordinates I inputted, the sensors finally gave out. The vehicle was still running, though, as the ion levels were still flowing. When we arrived to the Devilfish, we discovered the last wolf was missing. We patched the Devilfish with spare parts and left the area quickly encase the stranger went to gather friends.

On our latest event, we sought out a hill in the distance that may give us a good place to sleep for 2 Decs. When we arrived, we encountered a strange squad of horned Marines. I don’t remember much of these humans, other than that they are constantly at battle with their brothers. I determined that this squad is probably the reason we encountered the other units in battle. They must have been hunting each other on this abandoned planet. Without taking chances, we engaged quickly, disembarking and firing on their green transport. In our excitement and exhausted state, however, we were unable to affect the vehicle. These horned humans came out of their transport and appeared undaunted by our firepower as they ran towards us. Their vehicle began smoking and one of their number fired a vicious shot at our Devilfish, temporarily short-circuiting its systems. We quickly returned fire on this human and he was laid to rest on the ground. We then made short work of their vehicle, with a great explosion. While they glanced back at the devastation, we shot them all and returned them to their gods.

We have made our rest on this hilltop, made our repairs, checked our weapons. We are at 80% ammo and supplies. After we break camp, we will continue exploring this world until we receive further orders or complete our mission.

Pathfinder Team 5 of the Dense Environment Contingent Commune Data Report
Entry 2: Shas’la Sa’cea Voda, reporting 5 rotaa after Entry 1. No encounters occurred during the elapsed time.

On this morning, while we explored over this desolate planet, we kept low, in between the many sand dunes we discovered in the area. Relying primarily on the Devilfish’s sensor suite, we detected a sizeable contingent of blue Space Marines. From our studies, we learned that Space Marines of this color refer to themselves as Ultra-Marines. Expecting a much stronger resistance from a contingent worthy of a word as Ultimate, we positioned ourselves quickly to make use of the high dunes in the area. Powering down all but our sensors, we appeared oblivious to the quiet approach of these warriors. When we discovered the readings of several warriors around all sides but the rear, we powered on and shot the vehicle out between the dunes and, using the momentum, rolled out of the side of the transport, assuming an adequate and hidden position from the majority of the enemy. I personally remained in the vehicle to better monitor the area and locate target priorities for my team. Locating the warriors with the larger guns, I suspected these men to be more of a threat to our hasty position. Offering the location of one of them in sight of my team, I fired the vehicle’s weapons upon a warrior who was using the sand dune to hide his position. Due to the surprise attack, the warrior died quickly. My team had much more difficulty in dealing with their target however. I noticed we were hitting him accurately and piercing his armor, and yet this man would shrug off each shot as though it were nothing. These Ultra-Marines are true to their name. Hrcak attempted to use his Ion Rifle, and misfired, rendering himself unconscious from the explosion. Once our deception was apparent, the Marines ran to get closer to our position, while an unseen sniper and this hardened warrior fired upon us. As I drug Shas’la Hrcak into the transport bay, I witnessed Shas’la Drzak quickly taking cover by rolling further down the dune, with multiple rounds of fire focused on him, including a blast from a weapon larger than the Empire’s plasma rifles. I thought, however, that he may have met his end when one of these warriors rushed upon his position. He managed to fire on him though and the Ultra-Marine wisely ducked. Our position began to be overrun as Marines cresting the dune returned fire on Drzak, wounding him severely in the chest. Shas’la Istrazivak opened the rear hatch as we escaped the immediate danger and grabbed a hold of Drzak and hoisted him back into the Devilfish. We took a new position, bringing the Ultra-Marines exclusively to the front of the vehicle. I spotted their leader, spooked by our movement, adjusting his position to give new orders to his men. I quickly fired a burst of shots toward him and managed to bring him down. He was last seen rolling down the dune, spilling blood on the sand. This enraged his men and they ran forward, with renewed vigor. The closer ones managed to hurl grenades at our vehicle, bouncing off of the front shielding. I pulled our vehicle further back while firing yet more shots at the hardened warrior from earlier, proving yet again his mettle, even when his armor fails him. I didn’t see the Marines getting closer, and they surprised us when they managed to slip a grenade through our rear hatch. Istrazivak thought quickly and pulled the targeting node over top of the grenade, saving our lives, but damaging our combat systems. Taking our vehicle closer to the body of their leader, I fired the Devilfish’s addled weapons at the undying warrior in an attempt to distract him from our new purpose. Thinking we were now far enough away from the other warriors, their second assault on our vehicle came as a great surprise, their grenades beginning to crack the hull and leaving pinholes of light in our armor. Moving yet further away from these crazed fighters, we found ourselves overtop of their leader. Finding him alive, but with his legs broken, we gathered him up and quickly strapped him to the front of our transport. Loading back up and spinning back towards the Ultra-Marines, the message was clear. Continue to fight, and see your leader die. As our mission is to explore this planet, not eliminate those on it, we gave our terms: that they give us scans and maps of the area and we will release their leader. Seeing as they had no vehicle of their own, we knew they would not be able to keep up with us as we leave the area. They agreed for the exchange, and as expected, they attempted to destroy the vehicle one last time. After their last failure, we showed mercy and left them with their lives.

In our hasty attempt to put a great distance between ourselves and the Ultra-Marines, we inadvertently encroached upon a gathering of strange creatures. These creatures had weapons with the same coloring as their own bodies, and our sensors even found the weapons to have the same DNA as their owners. We have records of creatures like these invading Sept worlds, destroying much of our Empire. This will be a tough battle for our small team. Counting the enemy at some 14 signatures, we are greatly outnumbered. I hide the Devilfish in a crevasse between sand dunes and attempt to locate the most destructive of these creatures. My search is over when one of them fires its weapon, through the sand dune and rocking the vehicle on its position. I locate a position farthest from the other signatures and dispatch the team to take out this threat. After killing this creature, we found the largest of the remaining signatures to move much faster than expected and our hidden position wasn’t good enough. Hrcak, standing in front, took fire from the 3 large creatures, and Drzak and Istrazivac had to carry him onboard the Devilfish. Not risking another surprise jump by these creatures, we deftly maneuvered away, firing on the largest of the three, inflicting noticeable damage on the being. Keeping our distance, and with our sensor reports, I positioned the vehicle again so that the team will be out of harm’s way, firing on the weaker and smaller creatures, while remaining hidden from the monsters. After only killing one of the smaller beings, I discovered why these creatures were able to inflict so much suffering on the Empire. They made another giant leap towards us, larger than expected again, with the warrior creatures using their unexpected speed to gain a position to fire on my team. Drzak was wounded, and Istrazivac gave supporting fire while I brought him to the transport. Istrazivac did distract the creatures, but in so doing, took an injury as well. Acting out of great concern for failure, I dragged Istrazivac into the vehicle, and closed the rear hatch behind me. Firing upon their apparent leader again, and wounding the creature until it was a bloody mess, it kept walking and returning fire. Our signal node received a message from command, that we are needed on another planet and to reach a landing zone, where we will be retrieved. Seeing no gain in fighting these creatures, and not risking any severe damage, we withdrew from the fight and turbo-boosted away, towards the retrieval site.

With the medical nano-bots inside the Devilfish, my team was quickly back in one piece. After a quick rest, we approached the retrieval site, discovering a familiar vehicle. The green horned Marines we encountered earlier had another squad on the planet, this one seeming to be trapped in the sand dunes. I dropped the team off again, and Hrcak attempted again to overcharge his rifle. Successfully firing it, Hrcak managed to remove one of the weapons on the trapped vehicle. Istrazivak assisted, aimed carefully, and exploded the vehicle with one shot. In the explosion, the Marines inside scattered through the dunes, leaving one in the remains of the vehicle, retrieving his weapon from the wreckage. Taking advantage of the situation, Drzak killed the Marine while the rest of us gathered back into the vehicle to reposition and find the scattered forces. In systematic fire, we cleared the landing zone of all Marines.

After a few decs after the retrieval was supposed to occur, we received new orders from command. Pathfinder Team 6 was reported dead on the nearby planet and will not be requiring reinforcements. We are to continue our scans of the planet until command has decided the best time to send in a strike team for their data reports.

Pathfinder Team 5 of the Dense Environment Contingent Commune Data Report
Entry 3: Shas’la Sa’cea Voda, reporting 5 rotaa after Entry 2. No encounters occurred during the elapsed time.

We received reports from our long range scan of a new tracked vehicle crossing our path ahead. It was a great distance away, and with it traveling away from us, we decided to let it pass. After a dec, the long range scan reported the vehicle as stopping, and turning towards us. Having been spotted, we found a ruined town, and descended into it. Hrcak, Istrazivac, and Drzak each took positions around the center of town and waited for the vehicle to approach. When the vehicle finally got into range of the Devilfish’s Smart Missile System, I unleashed a barrage of fire on the side of the vehicle. The vehicle took a few hits on its right track and appeared to be in poor condition when the smoke cleared. My team moved closer to the target and prepared to unleash a volley of fire. One human soldier dressed in ancient colorations was seen exiting the vehicle. Hrcak saw the man examine his vehicle, cursing under his breath and searching the ruins of the town for their attacker. He spotted the man taking a small pouch off of his belt and opening it, removing a handful of material from it, the man tossed the contents high into the air. I could see the material, myself, come up into the air above the ruins and when the vehicle fired its weapons at the glass, it refracted down towards the Devilfish, to be absorbed by our shielding. These humans are resourceful. I turbo boosted our transport to the middle of the town in order to gain a better position to fire from, and with the enemy hiding behind a building, my team still couldn’t get to a position to fire without exposing themselves first. When more humans appeared sneaking around the town, we took the shots we could. Istrazivak took down one such human who appeared where I was positioned. Almost like ants, the other humans leaped out of their cover and returned fire in our direction, 2 of them pinning Hrcak down, wounding him and damaging his rifle. I took the Devilfish and went over the ruined building, landing on a rocky and craggy effigy of an eagle. I continued to fire at the opposing vehicle, with little luck. Istrazivak and Drzak fired on the humans coming in from the sides, as they moved to get closer to each other. Hrcak took cover and limped his way into the building, leaving his broken rifle on the street. The humans continued into the town and fired on the backside of Drzak, taking a laser to the shoulder. Without being able to break from the fight, I wasn’t able to secure him, and had to rely on my team to cover him. Keeping the Devilfish on the side of the enemy vehicle, I continued to fire on the weaker armor, but without finding another chink. When the vehicle finally came out from cover towards me, the Devilfish picked up several life signs inside of it. Realizing now how greatly we were outnumbered, I was in dismay for my team. Istrazivak took the opportunity to fire on this great vehicle, which had exposed its side completely to him, but again was unable to find the right spot. During his attempt to assist me, the humans were able to get even closer to his position, and shot him several times, putting him at best, in critical condition. As humans poured out of the vehicle in front of me, I noticed writing on their uniforms and it reminded me of a class on this army called ‘Imperial Guard’. These are fighters with little for advanced technology, but more than make up for it with bravery and cunning. They fired their primitive plasma weapons on the side of the Devilfish, and did great damage to our vehicle, as it crumpled in on itself, I managed to seal the doors and the troop capsule around myself, just before the vehicle came to a crash on the eagle rocks below it, I could hear the sounds of victory from these brave men. I waited for what felt like a few decs before attempting to open the seal on the capsule, preparing my Pulse Carbine for what might await me outside. In the distance, I could see the back of the vehicle and the humans outside of it, rolling slowly through the ruins, searching it thoroughly. I hid in the wreckage and hoped for the best of my men. When the Imperial Guard finally left the area, I slowly picked my way through the ruins myself, attempting to find the bodies of my comrades. When I approached the ruins in the center of town, rocks fell from the side, bringing my carbine to bear; Hrcak emerged from the ruins, one arm in an improvised sling, still missing his rifle. He lead me through the ruins to a half collapsed underlevel, where he had brought Istrazivak and Drzak to hide in the final moments of the battle, before the Devilfish had collapsed. Istrazivak was still unconscious, but stable, and Drzak couldn’t feel his legs. After a few rotaa, Hrcak and myself managed to repair enough of the medical nanobots in the troop capsule to revive Istrazivak and heal Drzak. I broadcasted a request for medical and repair supplies. With the four of us back on our feet, we managed to get the Devilfish functioning again.

As we began to leave this ruined town, we saw a great cloud of dust come up from the other end of the ruins, what looked like marines on small vehicles descended on the area. These marines were green like some of the others we have fought, but appeared even more grotesque and misshapen then their brethren. We took hasty positions around one of the buildings, and began firing as soon as they were in sight. Killing 2 of them almost immediately, the others quickly changed course, coming around the other side of the center ruin. One fired a Meltagun at point blank range into the front of the Devilfish, but I managed to slam the repaired Shielding System processor card back into its node, deflecting the devastating shot. In the marine’s rage, he drove straight for the front of the Devilfish, and the team hastily fired on him, Hrcak scoring the killing shot. As another marine rode his vehicle towards us, the men wasted no time in firing all weapons at him. Instead of turning the Devilfish to go on the outskirts of the ruins as I programmed it to, the Devilfish drove straight into the middle of the ruins. The final diseased marine sped around the ruins, firing its Meltagun into the side of the vehicle, causing the Devilfish to crack open again and let off an explosion, propelling me into the ruined building. As the marine sped towards my men, I was helpless to assist, my own weapon far below me at the bottom of the ruin. Drzak met him head on, with all the suppressing fire plinking off the marine’s vehicle. Driving his vehicle over Drzak, Istrazivak and Hrcak ran through the ruins and out of the town, I presume to lead him away and to finish him off. Not taking the bait, this lone marine scanned the area, finding a track left by the Imperial Guard, he threw his vehicle into overdrive and sped off in the direction of our last encounter. Climbing out of the ruins, I retrieved my carbine and ran to Drzak’s side. Finding his arm and leg broken from the vehicle, I wondered at just how much pain we Fire Caste can stand before we succumb to it. Stabilizing him, I turned to the wreckage of our transport, and saw little hope of getting it fully functional again. I found the remains of the broadcast system and pieced it back together, then sent another emergency request for supplies. I did what I could to retrieve the shattered pieces of the Devilfish and sort out what belongs to what system. After a few decs, Hrcak and Istrazivak cautiously approached the area, visibly shaken from the ordeal. I didn’t address their act of running away, as the situation was indeed grim, and I myself would have ran under those circumstances. After many rotaa passed, we finally got the Devilfish barely functional again, and I sent a report to the condition of the Devilfish and our low supplies.

When able, we vacated the area and found another ruined building, very tall, and standing by itself in a field of rubble. Agreeing this would be the best area to receive supplies from command, we approached the area. Being cautious, both due to recent events, and from the poor condition of our transport, Hrcak, Istrazivak, and Drzak went on foot while I drove the vehicle. With the sensors on the Devilfish still offline; we were taken by surprise when Drzak was shot from high above, by a sniper who had taken position on the rooftop of the tower. We immediately took cover and Istrazivak returned fire. Not wanting to run too many systems at once, I brought the Devilfish to a good vantage point, and then began firing, leaving myself stationary. Hrcak took a wide approach to the tower, attempting to circle around. Noticing the sheer number of what appeared to be more Ultra-Marines, I thought that we may yet meet our end here, before we even get our supplies. Where would we run now? I noticed a second sniper on the rooftop and fired all weapons on him, while Istrazivac exchanged shots with the first sniper. The second sniper had a much larger gun, resembling a regular Boltgun but with a larger barrel. This marine took a step back from the ruined edge of the roof when I fired on him and I could hear his screams as he fell off the other side of the tower. He landed with a crash and his Heavy Bolter fired aimlessly into the sky. As I checked Hrcak’s position, I noticed several of these marines stalking his position, steadily getting closer. One was even bold enough to leap from the peaks of rubble as he approached, throwing his own caution to the wind. Hrcak continued to fire his repaired rifle at each individual as they came close. When one of the marines snuck up from behind some rocks, he charged Hrcak on his own. I thought the worse when I saw this, knowing the marines’ strength in close combat. I could just see a head full of red hair on this marine and remembered a fight many rotaa ago. It appeared as though these Ultra-Marines had been tracking us, and predicted our next move. They must have set this trap for us, attempting to regain their honor. Hrcak leveled his rifle and held his fire until the marine was almost on him. Discharging his weapon, he shot the marine’s legs out from under him with the first shot, and finished him with a second shot to the back of the head. We still seemed very outnumbered, with a sniper still on the roof, focused now on Istrazivac, a couple more approaching from around the building, and I counted at least 3 or 4 more among the rubble, hounding Hrcak. I focused my fire on the marine’s coming around Hrcak and attempted to thin them out with little effect. The leader of these marines, with a giant hammer, leaped on top of a flat pile of rocks in front of the Devilfish, mere feet from the Drzak’s body. He seemed to stare right into eyes, seeming to challenge me from afar. Not confident with my ship’s systems being able to handle his coming onslaught, but without being able to save every man of my team if I fled now, I kept the Devilfish still and fired all weapons. I fired them not at the leader, but at the sniper on top of the ruins, hoping to free Istrazivac from the enemy fire. The sniper did duck down but I was unable to end his life. Hrcak was being surrounded again by two marines, and had a marine just a few feet in front of him. He fired over the shoulder of this oncoming Ultra-Marine and shot the leader off of his perch, ending his life for good on the rubble and rocks below. The marine then rushed in, and Hrcak managed to yet again shoot him in the chest, killing him before he got to him. Istrazivak finally shot and killed the sniper through all the cover of the rooftop, leaving only two marines in the area. The last marine crowding Hrcak came out from behind him and shot him in the back. I saw Hrcak lurch forward from the wound and he disappeared from my sight behind a mound of rocks. The other marine continued to sneak around the building, heading for the rear of my vehicle. Istrazivak shot and killed him before he could take advantage of his position on the Devilfish, and I targeted the last standing marine and let loose a torrent of missiles and burst fire. Istrazivak and myself gathered Drzak and Hrcak and placed them both in the medical unit, and we awaited our supply drop. It arrived about a rotaa later, and when we opened it, we found what Hrcak described as “a whole Devilfish worth of parts and supplies”. We set to work repairing every system with the new gear, going straight by the manual the Air Caste graciously sent with the crate. We are now fully resupplied and ready to continue with our final leg of exploration on this planet.

Pathfinder Team 5 of the Dense Environment Contingent Commune Data Report
Entry 4: Shas’la Sa’cea Voda, reporting 3 rotaa after Entry 3. No encounters occurred during the elapsed time.

We received communications from command that a Pathfinder was sent to our planet to aid us in our last stretch of the mission. He is supposed to be the last survivor of Team 6, who managed to charge their communications node enough to send a signal out. He is supposed to meet with us in one of the sectors we haven’t explored yet, keeping to his self until we arrive.

Checking our data and our maps, we set out for the new Pathfinder in one of the last unknown areas. After a couple dec elapsed, we encountered another ruined town. We entered warily and decided to do a quick search through the buildings for any alien relics or data left behind. We encountered a strange force that loosely resembled crazed women and pink hairless monkeys. Deciding that this strange cult posed little threat, we fired a few warning shots into their number. In snap response, they seemed to have an almost frantic demeanor. The crazed women ran with unholy speed towards us, with hate practically dripping from their claws. The pink creatures began gathering different colors of light from around themselves and somehow spewing fire from nothing at us. These fires burned both Shas’la Hrcak and Shas’la Drzak, but also seemed to burn one of them from the inside out, as it began belching fire onto its own feet. With such a deadly onslaught in just mere moments, I already began to despair. We held back their advance by returning fire on the 4 armed monkeys, while keeping an eye towards the fast women. We slew a few more monkeys, attempting to shoot the ones that proved to have more deadly energies. When the creatures unleashed their attacks again at us, I noticed that some of them spread their flames over a portion of one of the ruins that none of us were in. That must have been where this Pathfinder is. I have no idea whether or not he managed to survive the strange flames. One of the crazed women managed to skirt around the ruins and get behind where I was positioned. Having noticed her, I quickly fired at her and one of the pulse rounds took her in the throat, letting out an angry screech. The Devilfish began to rock as these strange energies encircled it and assaulted the shielding, I quickly ordered the vehicle to my location so that I may reposition quickly to the other side of the ruins, before the rest of the women descend on me. Before I managed to step into the safety of the transport, I turned and fired my rifle again at another woman, dispatching her with similar fashion. Luckily, I had that bit of distraction, as the vehicle let out a groan and was torn asunder by several other clawed women, who had jumped out from the other side of the building. The wreckage would have surely killed me. I took cover quickly into the ruin, where I noticed the remains of one of the women I previously shot. Thinking quickly, I smeared quantities of the blood over my body and armor, hoping that these creatures track by scent rather than some other sense. The creatures were quickly bored with the ruined town, finding nothing living to tear to shreds. As they walked through the shadows of the ruins, they appeared to evaporate into the darkness. I waited in shock and terror for what felt like many decs, almost sensing that at any moment they would reappear from the dark shadows behind me and tear my throat out. I quickly found the bodies of my fellow squad members, and even the body of the Pathfinder we sought and made sure they were stable. I made a hasty litter, big enough to drag the bodies, and I took several rotaa making my way back to the initial site where we received our supplies. I avoided areas that I could recall us having met resistance, but with much of the area looking alike, it was difficult and filled with paranoia. Once there, I retrieved parts of the old Devilfish, enough of the medical nanobots and containment fielding to make a crude patchwork device that I used on my men. After a few more decs, all were well and we made camp. It was the first sleep I had in eight rotaa. After introductions and revisiting of our mission statement, we concluded that a more hostile approach may be required to prevent underestimating those we come across. With the litter full of tools and spare propulsion parts, we made our way back to the abandoned town with its shadows full of death.

After taking our time and repairing our vehicle’s propulsion system, I noticed a familiar frequency detected on my head unit display, similar to the one from the vengeful Ultra-Marines and immediately informed the team. I and Shas’la Tash’var Osamljen, our unit transfer, took cover around one of the more solid buildings and posted the Devilfish out front, with Hrcak, Drzak, and Istrazivac inside, waiting for my signal as the sensors in the vehicle are still blown. We saw these Ultra-Marines approach and take position in some of the ruins across the town. They were closer than usual, perhaps smelling the dried blood and seeing the Devilfish sparking, as though possibly dead. We took the opportunity to quickly strike out, without waiting for any contact. Hrcak and Istrazivac disembarked, while Drzak attempted to operate the ion turbine servos, with no success, deciding instead to attempt the weapons’ system. Istrazivac fired on one of the snipers that were setting up, finding a weak point in the building, practically where he last stood, being melted by the flames. Hrcak followed by overcharging his rifle with luck and targeting a clump of these warriors, but missing by a long distance. The shot curved out strangely, perhaps from the heat of the fires, but when it exploded and screams echoed from one of the closer ruins, it brought a moment of comic irony that those sadistic monkeys had served the Greater Good, at least for that one shot. When one of those Ultra-Marines ran out and took a knee in the street, I saw a large weapon on his shoulder, with a barrel similar in style to our Missile Pods, and Drzak managed to engage the weapons before he fired at Drzak. Our initial volley was so effective that it broke the Ultra-Marines morale and they retreated from the field of battle.

When we continued our mission, we moved on and found a rocky valley between two scorched mountains. Traveling through it, we had a strange encounter. We found several other Tau forces on the planet, but they seemed half mad. They bore the colors of Shas’o Vior’la Shovah Kais Mont’yr, but did not address us when we hailed them. Instead, they fired upon our Devilfish, attempting to destroy it. This came as a shock to all of us, and we did not even have the frame of mind to evade the fire. The vehicle took many hits and cracks formed along the repair work we had done. Shaking off this disturbing event, we returned fire without question and destroyed one of the XV-8s. May the Shas’ui inside find rest from his battles. The other XV-8 fired again and sent his Gun Drones around us, attempting to flank our vehicle. We continued firing and yet again, were put off guard when a Piranha and another XV-8 approached on our flanks, firing as they came. We saw the Fusion Blaster on the Piranha and feared the worse, but apparently the bloodlust in the warriors was so strong that it hindered their aim. I took advantage of their failure and skirted the front of the Piranha with the Devilfish, firing all weapons into the side The Gun Drones on it escaped, but I did manage to wreck the vehicle. As the enemy continued to approach and fire on us, we continued to hold our ground. I eventually dispatched the last Drone in a frenzied battle as it came hurtling towards me, attempting to kill me in close combat. When we approached the XV-8s, we came across a foul odor coming from them. When we got close enough to open them, there was nothing but charred remains and burned putrid vomit throughout the cockpit. Whether they were alive to begin with or dead long before they encountered us, we won’t know. I faintly hear the sound of a child laughing from behind me, and I quickly turn, only to find Osamljen standing there, holding his nose in one hand. I must watch the shadows.

While performing funeral rites over the fallen warriors, a warning appeared in my HUD, alerting me to a vast group of living creatures approaching. Grabbing my binoculars, I scanned the distance and found another of my fears. The warriors of the Imperial Guard have returned, luckily now without their vehicle. We quickly positioned ourselves in the rocks and waited on their slow approach. I placed the Devilfish on aggressive so that I may concentrate on the battle to come. When it began to fire, I knew the time had come and I and Osamljen began using our Markerlights to assist Hrcak with his aiming. We quickly located and killed the Imperial Guard with weapons unique to their squad, to prevent their use against us and attempted to locate their leader. They opened fire when they got in range, and we took cover rather than continue to scan their large numbers. We each traded shots with the enemy, with more of them being injured than us, until finally, while Istrazivac was lying prone, lining up his shot, he took a laser to his shoulder and rolled off of his rock. Soon after, Drzak and Hrcak were also shot. I became dizzy, and I could not focus on what was in front of me. I saw the rocky hill and ruins of our last encounter with these men, and how we narrowly survived. I can admit I was afraid and I ran from the fight, only hoping that our Devilfish would slow these men enough for me to escape. I ran until I couldn’t hear the sounds of gunfire any more, when suddenly I heard an explosion in the distance, and I knew the end of my squad had come. I grew angry with myself, and returned, green-knuckling my Pulse Carbine, intent on death. When I found the wreckage, and none of the Imperial Guard present, I flew into a rage, and fired many shots into the air. It wasn’t for another dec before I could calm myself at my failure and search for my team. I found them, Istrazivac with only a grazed shoulder and admitting to being rendered unconscious by his fall of his rock, and the others nearby, stabilized. I asked him if he heard my gun shots from earlier, and he replied that he had only come to less than a dec ago and hadn’t heard anything. I admitted to him my failure and he reminded me of the battle against the mounted Marines, where he and Hrcak had ran. He told me it was of fear also, and that it can happen at any moment. I felt better of his words, but it did not heal me of the wound I held inside.

When we continued through the final area of our mission, we sent word to command that we would need retrieval at coordinates on the other side of the valley. We estimated only a few decs to travel, but informed them that would be a rotaa, just so we won’t miss extraction. When we arrived, we were discovered by several Ultra-Marines again, and we took all the lessons we learned from fighting them and hid within the rocks, staying out of range of their boltguns. As they ran towards us, we laid down a volley of fire, but with little effect among the rocky terrain. They came upon us and fired on Hrcak and Osamljen, causing both of them to duck for cover, but Hrcak taking an injury regardless. When Istrazivac returned fire on the exposed Ultra-Marines, I witnessed him land his entire clip of rail shots on the Marine, yet somehow the rails didn’t pierce his skin. Istrazivac looked surprised and immediately began to get up from his post, in an attempt to put some distance, instead the Ultra-Marine drew out his Bolt Pistol and shot him where he crouched. Drzak and I quickly boarded the Devilfish and sped away from the oncoming warriors. We stopped on the other side of the large hill that we would use as our retrieval site. When we spotted Ultra-Marines climbing that very hill, we laid fire upon them, killing several of them. A few even snuck up behind my own position, and I was lucky enough to not be hit, at nearly point blank range. When the Devilfish exploded once more, a great flash of ion energies lashed out from the turbines, blinding the Marines that were coming out us. We were looking away from the explosion when it occurred, and instead of looking over our shoulders at it, we took the opportunity to reposition and take account of the situation. When the blast cleared, The Ultra-Marines were in the distance, getting away from what I can only assume to be a possible second unstable explosion. We remained low for a time, and made our way to our fallen friends. We reported our damage, and an Orca arrived on schedule. We received orders to ensure total detonation of the remains of the Devilfish, after securing our data node. Drzak and I loaded our comrades onboard and we followed suit. With one last look over my shoulder, I pulled the large door shut behind me. Mission Successful.

Data node recovery on Q-21: 4271st cycle of the Etherals' Reign
This is Shas'nel Sa'cea Voda recording a succesful retrieval of the lost data node of Shas'ui Dal'ugh Vojnik.
When we had arrived at Shas'ui Vojnik's last position, we discovered the scattered remains of his Stealth team's XV-25s, which appeared scorched and visibly ripped to shreds. All of the victims were either missing or indistinguishable from the carnage. Several of the Fire Warriors accompanying me were forced to back away from the sight or fear embarrassment. Shas'vre Ke'lshan Izvidac, our XV-104 pilot, detected an anomaly occurring in a nearby ruin. I didn't like the sound of that, remembering my time as a young Pathfinder, long before I was offered the honorary title of Fireblade. I ordered my team of Pathfinders to the top of the collapsed building behind Shas'ui Vojnik's suit, so they would have sight of anything coming and with their experimental Pulse Accelerator, they may even provide cover fire if their markerlights proved ineffective. I could almost feel the world splitting, my hair being pulled in towards the anomaly, and I knew at once that one of my old nightmares had come to revisit me. I quickly yelled for the Fire Warriors to form up around me, in rank and file. I ordered Shas'vre Izvidac to take cover and he looked at me incredulously. Fearing that I may look a fool for my outburst, I did not push the issue. I may be in command here, but Shas'vre Izvidac is my equal in rank and deserves my respect. He sealed his suit and moved the graceful behemoth behind the ruin, out of my sight. I had to trust him to obey my command. On the first sighting, I saw the four armed pink creatures of my past, the ones I now call 'pink horrors'. I ordered the Pathfinders to give us some markerlight guidance and the infrared danced on their pink flesh. With better aim, the Fire Warriors and I fired away at the horrors. When I looked for the XV-104, I saw that he was having great difficulty. His nova reactor let out a great explosion in his back, forcing him to lurch to the side, then as he overcharged his Ion Accelerator, it let out a great whine before it, too, caused a backlash of energy, further damaging the XV-104, nearly taking the arm off. Whatever these horrors did as they entered this world, it must have affected Shas'vre Izvidac. When I looked back at the creatures, they had all ducked for cover from our volley of fire, keeping them at a distance. More creatures appeared over a hill. These were flat, flying creatures, resembling some type of sea life. I chose to ignore the small creatures and focus another wave of shots at the horrors. This time, Shas'vre Izvidac managed to aid us in our efforts. With minimal effect showing on the number of horrors in front of us, I hoped for a miracle. The ray creatures swarmed our line, but my men managed to move fast enough to avoid the creatures. They were dangerously close, though, when they stopped in their flight, beginning to turn around. Knowing all too well what those pink horrors could do, I ordered the warriors to ignore the rays and kill the pink creatures. Shas'vre Izvidac fired at the rays and leaped forward. He swore into his communicator and told me to kill the bastards for him and Shas'ui Vojnik. I screamed for him to return to his post, but it was too late, he had engaged the creatures. The rays began screaming and swarmed over him in an intense fight, but it was sure to be a matter of time for his demise in his faulty suit. With Shas'vre Izvidac's lhas'rhen'na, we laid a deadly rain of pulse fire on the pink horrors, killing every last one. I turned to the XV-104 just in time to see one of the screaming rays burror into the chest of the suit, soon followed by a choked scream and the collapse of the XV-104. The creatures then fled from us as we fired uselessly and entered the ruin. When we lost sight of the beasts, I yelled for the Pathfinders to run, but it was too late for them. I could hear their screams from every opening in the building and could do nothing about it. The remaining warriors and I ran around to a large opening on the side of the ruin. We quickly opened fire on the creatures, with extreme prejudice. By the time the rays got to us, only one was left alive. It flung its dying body at me, pincers flailing. I shoved it aside and with nothing but my hands to fight it with, I decided to remove my helmet. I beat the creature with it until it stopped screaming and twitching, leaving a sickening smell in the air and ooze dripping off of my helmet. My men looked at me as though I was about to turn my wrath on them. I threw the helmet aside and took a breath. I announced that it was for Shas'vre Izvidac, may his deeds live on to inspire us. We took assessment of ourselves and our fallen, and as I reported our success and our losses, the men performed a ceremony for our brothers. I took it upon myself to upload Shas'ui Vojnik's data node to my processor and shot the original to a drone that Command sent to collect the data. I want to know what our Stealth team found.

Investigation of Shas’ui Vojnik’s Data Node on Q-21: 4271st cycle of the Ethereals' Reign

After doing a preliminary examination of Shas’ui Vojnik’s data node, I started where he began, in a small ruined town several rotaa away. Most of our reinforcements arrived, replenishing our numbers, with the rest to arrive soon. I looked over the new XV104. The suit appeared immaculate and after reading the battle report on the Shas’vre, I realized this would be his first run as a pilot for this particular suit. Hopefully he can keep the unstable systems in check. Shas’vre Vior’la Svjez, a fitting name.

We discovered a rather large force of Ultra-Marines currently occupying the ruins when we arrived. We assessed their unit and opted to strike the side with the most distance from the rest, in order to buy us time before being engaged by too many at once. I had faith in my men and their equipment and wished for Svjez to prove himself. The Pathfinders took a high vantage point and immediately warned us that we had been spotted. We made for hasty positions in a nearby crater and when the marines rounded a wall riding these small vehicles, the Pathfinders already lit them up with markerlights. We unleashed a volley of fire with pinpoint accuracy, but the superior armor of these Ultra-Marines dissipated much of our pulse fire. Svjez opened fire as well and managed to destroy a few of these riders. The marines, however, continued their advance and smashed right into our lines, forcing my men to disparate measures in the close combat. When the men began to break from the superior skills of the Ultra-Marines, I attempted to take the squad and break away from combat, only to be chased down by more riders. I took a blow to the head and fell unconscious. When I came to after the initial battle, Shas’vre Svjez made his report to me. Only one rider left the combat with my men defeated. He moved towards our position, but Svjez engaged him in combat in order to save the Pathfinders from his wrath. They had informed Svjez of fast skimmer positioned on top of a neighboring ruin, possibly reporting to the rest of the army. He was engaged in combat for a good deal of time due to the Ultra-Marine’s surprisingly good armor and shield. He eventually struck a lucky blow and moved quickly to engage the vehicle, but with it out of reach, he had nothing better than to fire all weapons as soon as he was able. He reported that a few more marines emerged from the crater, but were no match for his overcharged ion accelerator. He managed to keep that from overheating at least.

With the initial strike over, I noticed that the second squad of Fire Warriors arrived just in time for the next phase. A second squad of riders appeared from a clearing ahead, bearing down on our position. Just as we readied our weapons for them, a large object plummeted from the sky. It shook the ground as it hit, and a great machine exited from behind the large cone-shaped pod. Svjez’s systems kicked on and overrid his manual targeting. The fusion blaster aimed and fired its shot, destroying the object and shattering it to pieces. This was both good and bad, as it cleared the path to the great machine behind it, but also allowed it to return fire on us, which it did, causing a couple casualties in the squad. While the XV104’s fusion blaster switched to manual fire again, Svjez initiated his Nova Reactor to add layers of protective shielding onto himself as he approached the great machine. He aimed his accelerator and destroyed it easily enough without concerning himself with distracting it from the rest of us. We turned towards the remaining Ultra-Marine riders and fired another full volley on them, moments before Svjez used his jetpack thrusters to get between us and them. The riders came on anyways, moving deftly around his hulking suit. We were once again beset upon in close combat. I rehearsed to myself the close combat doctrine that we learn in the academy and again realize just how inadequate our strength and stature are in comparison to these marines. As we turned to flee these humans, they rode as down much like their brethren, only this time I managed to retain consciousness. My weapons, however, landed a distance away, with the riders heading for Svjez. I hoped that he could handle himself against this foe. As they smashed together in combat, my translator appeared to go faulty, as I swear I heard the leader shout out “I’m going to tear the Frog from THAT suit!”. A strange battle cry. By the end of their duel however, only the leader stood, with Svjez’s suit crunched in and inoperable. The lone rider turned for the Pathfinders. I cringed, thinking about the lighter armor that the Pathfinders wore, and hoped their aim would be true. A hail of pulse fire erupted and I had to duck, myself, to keep from being hit by friendly fire. When I looked back up, I noticed the wheel of the vehicle in the air, spinning freely, the rider dying on the ground. We had narrowly defeated this force. We repaired the XV104, collected ourselves, and reported casualties, then we scoured the ruins. We found a broken burst cannon from an XV25 in one of the ruins and we knew we were in the right place. It appeared as though they were being chased by something. We would have to continue on to get more clues.

We continued to a large nearby ruin, where we found yet more marines. These, however, wore the dark green armor of Dark Angels. They spotted us and immediately hid among the ruins, keeping out of sight. When we spotted a few marines a distance away in a pile of rubble, we fired upon them, stretching our range to the max. Surprisingly, a few marines with packs much like our jetpacks landed not far from Svjez and piled into him with hammers, axes, and grenades. He was doing all he could to dodge their swings and attempt to smash one with his shield. The marines were undaunted however. Fearing of hitting our comrade, we continued to fire on the distance marines, keeping an eye to the assault. When there was only one Dark Angel left to fire at, he broke and ran away from us, taking the moment to fully check on Svjez, I noticed he was very battered. He had just finished off the marines with a mighty swing of his fist, smashing him into the ground. With the suit barely intact, he advanced around the ruin and reported that there were several more of them hiding out on the other side. I saw him overcharge his weapon, what I believed to be a bad judgment, but managed to fire a full blast on the men, reporting that he dispatched all but one. The marine turned and fled into the fog that had settled in the area. Taking the weather as a bad sign to move in, we set camp and waited it out, so that we would be sure not to miss any clues in our search for what happened to Shas’ui Vojnik and his squad.

Investigation of Shas’ui Vojnik’s Data Node on Q-21: 4271st cycle of the Ethereals' Reign
Entry 2

Nearing the end of my research, we found ourselves close to where we began. In a ruined warehouse, I began to get a feeling that we weren’t alone, just as the weather picked up again. A bad storm quickly descended on us and spun a circle in the daylight sky. This was freakish weather, even for this planet. I ordered the unit together, but before the Pathfinders could get to our position, the storm struck. A large discharge of weird energy erupted from the far side of the scrap yard. In its place, I could clearly see a figure standing in the smoking crater, charred and still. After a moment, it collapsed backwards and vanished in a puff of smoke. It was then that I noticed the two large, spider/crab-like machines bearing down on us from two directions and the pink creatures behind the scorch mark. Whatever that creature was, this was surely proof that the Greater Good was on our side. Without direction, the Pathfinder squad kneeled in position and fired markerlights toward the closest spider-crab machine from our position. Shas’vre Svjez engaged his Nova Reactor, giving himself greater shielding. He, then, took it upon himself to fire on the machine with everything he has, followed by charging into the machine. The storm seemed to change again, striking out to the evil creatures, its effect unknown. It was a hard fight, and looked to go bad for Svjez when the machine got on top of his suit. He pulled his Ion Accelerator back around, however, and fired straight into the belly of the spider-crab, blowing it to pieces. In the meantime, the other machine approached slowly from the other side, firing strange weapons at us, but we managed to avoid being hit. Shas’vre Svjez used a large piece of ruined wall to hide his approach towards the final machine, and reported the slow advance of the pink horrors. I ordered the Fire Warriors and Pathfinders to take better cover from the machine, just in case Svjez couldn’t make it in time to assist us against it. The machine moved closer, oblivious to the XV-104 hiding behind the wall. I broadcasted the exact position of the spider-crab to Svjez, who then fired up his Nova Reactor again, causing a charge to build on his Fusion Blasters. He engaged his jetpack and quickly leaped the building in one jump, appearing right next to the spider-crab. After firing his overcharged Fusion Blaster, Svjez left the crab as a pair to the other smoking wreckage. He then continued around the ruin again, my last image of him, as he geared up for an aggressive jump. He reported getting into melee with the pink creatures to ensure they wouldn’t get near to the troops. His tactics are strange to me, and I think he risks too much at times when there is no true need. Moments after his report, the freak storm seemed to twist again and another discharge of energy occurred, right in front of our positions. A large number of clawed women appeared from the smoke. Simultaneously, the Fire Warriors, Pathfinders, and I raised our weapons to the new threat, but as quickly as they appeared, they dissolved back into the smoke. Shas’vre Svjez reported the same action with the pink horrors beneath his feet. I am proud of my men for handling themselves so well under, what I have learned to be, a great threat.

We rested for a dec and then received communications from an elite element known as Da’nem’myr’era, Arrows in the Night. They requested our assistance in preparing for a mission they were about to undergo by running through a training scenario. They promised it would not take much of our time and even supplied the training adapters to add to our weapons. I agreed to the engagement and briefed my men on the scenario we would run through. We would have several key points to either hold or prevent Da’nem’myr’era from reaching. It sounded simple enough, but I knew this elite element had the advantage of agility and speed by employing the XV-8 armor. I ordered the Pathfinders to a tall ruin, Shas’vre Svjez to the other side from us, and the Fire Warriors and I would take to a nearby crater. As soon as the Arrows fired a blast into the air to signal that we may begin, the Pathfinders fired markerlights at the opposing XV-104. Svjez wasted no time in using the assistance and firing the training bursts towards him. With minimal effect against Da’nem’myr’era, we braced for their answer to our initial strike. The XV-8s approached slowly towards us, while their Shas’vre narrowly missed firing on us. Shas’vre Svjez added additional energy to his shields and I ordered a focused volley of fire on the opposing Riptide, using everything available. We registered as performing slight damage to areas of the armor. Shas’vre Svjez decided to attempt to tackle the opposing XV-104, leaving the Pathfinders and Fire Warriors to fire on the opposing XV-8s. When the Crisis suits approached, they out training plasma shots on my squad, marking two of them, registering as casualties. We quickly returned fire on them, inflicting excessive amounts of registered kills, causing them to slowly walk back towards their side, the shame almost glowing off of them. The two Riptides continued their wrestling in the center of our playing field, with Svjez obviously having the upper hand in the fight. We slowly approached towards the Shas’o of Da’nem’myr’era, wearing XV-88 armor, stationed far in the rear in an attempt to pick us off. When the opposing XV-104 registered as having a large cavity in his chest armor, Svjez released the warrior and noticed where our attention was turned, he quickly turned to face the great veteran and leveled his Ion Accelerator on him and his drone, letting out one large blast on them. Both were lined in the red registry, showing as dead beyond recovery. We gathered in the center of the field, where the two Riptides had previously engaged. All of my men removed their helmets, in respect for the elite warriors before us. They honored us in returning the respect. They informed me that we had an impressive display of tactics and command and had learned a few things on how to engage superior numbers. When I asked the Shas’o, however, on what he might have learned from me, I was surprised to see that the respect he showed me was only for the warriors around us, and that he wore his superior rank as his armor against me. He ignored my words, placed an armored hand on my shoulder, and closed his armor, ordering the men to gather the training devices. When Arrows of the Night finally left our position, I looked around and saw the great improvement in the morale of my unit. Perhaps now would be the time to finish this search for answers.

With my final review of the Shas’ui Vojnik’s data, we approached a desolate place, where pillars of earth rose above the surrounding hills. There, we spotted the position of what could be the same vehicles that Vojnik’s final report mentions. As we got closer, I identified these two vehicles as Imperial Guard Chimeras, which nearly matches with the description in the report. They must have sustained damage to one of their vehicles, as a third one was nowhere near. I told the men that these are the same forces that may have actually killed Shas’ui Vojnik, or at least stolen the data that he was sent after. With their spirits high and vengeance in their actions, the men turned highly aggressive. Shas’vre Svjez immediately engaged his Nova Reactor and let his Ion Accelerator charge for a moment, while the Pathfinders aimed their markerlights at the Chimera they could see best. Svjez let off a huge blast of ionic energy, tearing the vehicle in pieces with a great ripping blast as atoms were repelled and attracted to each other. The Imperial Guard warriors quickly climbed out and escaped the explosion of metal. The Fire Warriors were however well out of range of firing on these men as they appeared from the smoke. The final Chimera pulled to the side, in order to get a clear shot on the closest of our unit, Shas’vre Svjez. None of the shots, however, managed to get through his superior armor. When a third Chimera appeared from around a hill, behind Svjez, I cursed our luck, surprised that our sensors hadn’t picked up the threat. Svjez’s systems kicked on though, warning him of the new threat and overriding his manual targeting control. Svjez fired his Fusion Blaster, cutting the vehicle open like a surgeon’s scalpel. While the squad from the first destroyed vehicle approached us, the Fire Warriors fired a full volley on them, dropping all of them to the ground in a gory mess. Shas’vre Svjez then kicked the closest half of the Chimera he destroyed seconds before, rolling the vehicle over the last survivors. Screams of pain and agony were quickly silenced when he kicked the vehicle a second time, sliding the hot, melted armor of the vehicle across the ground. I shuddered at the pure awesome power of that armored suit. While I was distracted by this display, I didn’t notice the final Chimera backing away from our forces, Svjez, however, immediately and swiftly moved towards it, melting it in much of the same fashion. When the Imperial Guard piled out of the hot vehicle, Svjez launched his suit into a jump, landing with a thundering crunch on the wreckage. They quickly threw their weapons on the ground and quickly hoisted a piece of white fabric. I believed this to mean they repented for fighting us. We ordered the survivors on their knees and held them at gunpoint while the Pathfinder squad searched their vehicle’s and comrade’s remains for any sign of Shas’ui Vojnik’s gear. When they produced a cracked node from one of the melted vehicles, I quickly grabbed ahold of it, twisting a reader into place. A map appeared on the ground, still encoded completely in our language. There were coordinates for a wealth of resources, hidden in a passage under one of the ruined cities. The Empire could put this to great use, funding the efforts of Shas’o O’Shaserra. After securing our guests, we set camp and sent our report to command, and I requested a private contact for Shas’o Shadowsun’s Firststrike Cadre. At first, I was denied, but then a dec later I received another transmission from Da’nem’myr’era, with a frequency and a star address. I entered in this information and was pleased to find out this was what I was looking for when a proud feminine voice replied.

Securing Resources on Q-21: 4271st cycle of the Ethereals' Reign

This is Shas'nel Sa'cea Voda recording my attempt to locate and hold precious resources for Shas’o O’Shaserra’s campaign.
After my communications with Shas’o O’Shaserra regarding my find, she ordered me to secure the area in preparation for her arrival. These resources will be of great use in her crusade. As we pulled away from the area, a great clamor arose from the earth. Machine skeletons clawed their way from the ground, and a large ship, like those that travel on water shot out from the piles of rock, leveling out in much the same way as our Devilfish transports. It sported a large barreled gun, pointed straight at our position. Having never fought against forces such as these, I took the direction of their cylindrical weapons for hostile intent. With my men loosely scattered, we made the best of it by attempting to surround the machines with pulse fire. When the metal barge fired on my Fire Brother, Shas’nel Bork’an Istrazivac, who recently arrived to aid my mission in support of Shas’o Shadowsun, it killed a few of his Fire Warriors. I ordered the Skyrays and Shas’vre Vior’la Svjez to destroy the vessel, which they did in a hail of missiles and ionic blasts. Our two squads of Fire Warriors fired upon the closest of the machine skeletons, destroying several of them in our rain of fire. When the machines pieced themselves back together and climbed back up from the dirt, I knew this would not be so easy. They continued to approach our position, but I was able to figure out then that they weren’t actually after our forces. They moved with purpose towards a green shard located near my squad, and when one of the groups of skeletons veered slightly, I spotted a second shard near the wreckage of the metal ship. These must be important to them, and thus we must have it encase it proves valuable in future engagements. I forwarded this intel to Istrazivac, who then advanced his squad towards the destroyed vehicle. When the skeleton machines advanced on him and fired, the barrage of fire forced him and his men to find cover, with more of them being killed. We quickly counterfired in hopes of bringing a true death to these machines. When we achieved this, Istrazivac ordered his men further towards the objective, while the rest of us fired on the remaining machines. Just before he reached the shard, the skeletons began to descend on them from behind, which Svjez intercepted by assaulting the machines from behind. The fight however made little difference, with the XV-104 taking damage straight to the sensors. Svjez was forced to retreat from the fight, which allowed the machines to actually get to the shard first, due to Istrazivac and his men having to give space to the fight. When the machines reached the shard, they quickly retreated back into the earth, dragging the shard with them. We had one ourselves, and only took minor casualties from the fight. I’ll send this shard to command and have it analyzed. We gathered ourselves back up, and brushed the dust off from this strange encounter.
We left the area and moved to a nearby ruin on our route to the coordinates in Shas’ui Vojnik’s data node. The weather took a drastic turn for the worse and when we arrived, our sensors picked up a sizeable force already in the ruins. Their signatures indicated a familiar force, consisting of pink monkeys and manta rays. There was a large, lumbering, obese creature with these smaller forces. I quickly ordered the Skyrays and XV-104 to gun down the manta rays, before they can cause too much damage to our lines. They killed a few of them luckily, but they continued towards us. The pink horrors spaced out in a tactical move to reduce the potential impact of one of Svjez’s ionic blasts. The lumbering behemoth slowly continued towards us. More creatures appeared in the distance, a smaller demon, perched on a floating disc, and several clawed females crowded some cover in the distance. Svjez’s systems engaged and fired on the disc demon, but failed to get a clear shot through the piles of rock and ruin. We fired on the more immediate threat, the remaining manta rays, and killed them off. I ordered the Skyrays to fire off their smaller missiles at the disc demon, killing it as well. The rest of my men fired on the lumbering, puss covered creature with little effect. The large creature came threateningly close to Istrazivac and his men, which Svjez responded by moving between it and the unprotected Fire Warriors. The creature responded by assaulting the XV-104, inflicting some damage in the ensuing fight. Svjez pulled back behind the Fire Warriors, giving a clear line of fire to the obesity. We all fired on the pink horrors, which were clearly going for some object in the ruin, and on the behemoth. We killed several of the pink creatures, but were unable to affect the creature in front of us. The situation appeared dire as the creature approached closer and closer. The storm turned again, and all at once, the demonic creatures disappeared in the sudden blackness. They seemed to have distracted us long enough for them to retrieve something from the ruins. This appeared to be another failure. Other forces were extracting everything they needed from this planet. I just hope we can do the same when our time comes.
After sustaining a number of casualties to our Fire Warriors, I decided it was time to bring in some new forces. I sent a request for a small mercenary band of Kroot warriors. Perhaps their hunting instincts can help against larger prey. I attached a request for more parts and repairs for the vehicles and Riptide, of course, and a steady stream of supplies to help fortify our position when we get there.

Securing Resources on Q-21: 4271st cycle of the Ethereal’s Reign
Entry 2

As we approached the rendezvous site for our reinforcements, we were ambushed from above. Two egg-shaped craft crash-landed in the center of our movement formation. I immediately ordered the Fire Warriors into the ruins we were passing and I saw that Shas’vre Svjez’s override protocols weren’t functioning properly; perhaps this encounter was jamming it. When the two crafts made a hissing noise as airtight seals were broken, five panels on each popped loose and crashed to the ground, signaling the charge outward of blood red marines. They turned and assailed the XV-104 with everything they had, from bolter fire to a strange pulsing energy swirling in the air. The Skyrays returned fire with everything in their arsenal and Svjez overcharged his Ion Accelerator. I ordered the warriors to join in the hail of death. Moments later, I ordered a ceasefire and saw nothing left but bone and bits of flesh where the brave marines once stood. The Kroot mercenaries I had requested were spotted, running to our position carrying the supplies. A third craft crash-landed and this time Svjez’s override kicked in. He launched an overcharged ion shot and blew the transport to pieces and killing one of the marines, tearing him to shreds. The red warriors fired flame and bolters into the unprotected flesh of the exposed Kroot, causing them to drop the supplies in a panic to run away. We returned fire and finished off the last of this surprise threat, down to a man. We gathered the supplies and greeted the surviving comrades.
We continued towards our destination the next dec when we were ambushed again by a demonic force. The telltale sign of the suddenly vicious weather gave us plenty of warning to position ourselves, however. Two large monstrosities approached from ahead with a swarm of smaller creatures behind in the fog. One of the monstrosities, which seemed to be a humanoid creature on six legs, began spewing forth with a torrent of blue flame at Svjez, engulfing him in the fires. Luckily, his superior armor proved sufficient. We began firing immediately, but with few targets available that I could hope to do anything against, I ordered the Fire Warriors to fire on the bulbous creature with the massive sword in hand. We didn’t affect it at all, and I feared for our mission and our lives. The Skyrays and Svjez fired everything they had at the six-legged creature, crippling three of the legs on its right side and immobilizing it. At least now its fires cannot reach me and my men. As the lumbering beast and the smaller demons approached, I saw the pink of the horrors coming for me and knew that we must kill them at all costs. I ordered everyone to ignore the behemoth and open fire on the small creatures coming out of the fog. The warriors did as ordered, but I could see the fear growing in their eyes as the shadow of the large creature fell over us. They all opened fire quickly towards it, but it was too late. When it crashed into us, it was like the ruins around us collapsed on top of us. Over half of our men died in the initial strike of the huge sword and I quickly shouted for a fall back. As we ran, I could hear the last of the screams of the men who couldn’t keep up. I, Istrazivac, and a couple of the younger Fire Warriors made it out and away from the beast before we slowed. When I turned to look back, I could barely see the Kroot, who had separated early in order to flank the enemy, the Skyrays, and Svjez heavily engaged with the fight in front of them. The obese creature sat in the ruins we were in and feasted on my men. With the creature distracted, the rest of our forces seemed to make short work of the demons. When it was finished gorging itself, it lazily looked up from its meal and somehow seemed to force itself and the other demons out of existence in a swirl of gaseous energies.
That visage of the creature devouring our warriors will forever haunt me. Even Istrazivac couldn’t look at me or the soldiers for the rest of the march to our destination. I will have to recommend all of our men for a psych evaluation from the horrors they have witnessed this day. At least the veteran pilots of the Skyrays and Svjez managed to hold their own. I began to consider how we will hold our position on the coordinates while we await Shas'o O’Shaserra's arrival. I will have to send another communication to command, requesting materials and expertise in constructing a defensible fortification.

Securing Resources on Q-21: 4271st cycle of the Ethereal’s Reign
Entry 3

We arrived at the location given by Shas’ui Vojnik’s Data Node, where command had already sent the requested supplies. We constructed the small building quickly, using the field manual that was sent with it. It took us the better of two decs to finish it. No sooner had we finished, a large group of Imperial Guard arrived on site, with what looked to be close to fifty foot soldiers and two heavily armored tanks.
Istrazivac, the Fire Warriors, and I all took to the new bunker, with the Skyrays taking the flank nearest the horde of troops Shas’vre Svjez defending us from the tanks. The Kroot immediately scouted out around to get behind the tanks. The Skyrays and the squad of Fire Warriors opened up on the soldiers approaching us, killing nearly a third of their number in a devastating hail of fire. However, Svjez didn’t have similar luck against the tanks and only managed to cut the hull of what seemed to be the commander’s tank with his Fusion Blaster. He approached them quickly with his jetpack, I assume, as when the tanks returned fire on him, they blew his legs out from under him, forcing him to crash to the ground in a shower of sparks and shrapnel. I hoped he was alright in the cockpit of the suit or would be a grizzly death. The soldiers quickly retreated, out of the range of our Pulse Rifles, but Istrazivac and I continued to be of use by firing our Markerlights to benefit the Skyrays. When the Kroot arrived behind the tanks, they were awed by the great vehicles, intimidated by the armor their rifles couldn’t touch. They turned to a squad of Imperial Guard hiding out of range of our Pulse Rifles and killed them all with pulse fire of their own. The Skyrays performed according to plan and eventually killed all of the exposed foot soldiers. The enemy tanks meanwhile had turned on the Kroot and killed many of them, even as they took cover in the surrounding terrain. They abandoned their position and retreated towards the bunker in quick fashion. When all that was left of the enemy forces advancing on our position were the two armored tanks, the Skyrays opened up, firing their battery of Seeker Missiles, destroying one of the vehicles. The final vehicle then killed all of the Kroot mercenaries in a stream of gunfire before it turned and quickly exited. Luckily the commander of that vehicle didn’t know we had no more missiles ready to penetrate their hull. With the threat routed, I quickly left the bunker and ran to eject Svjez from his wrecked XV-104. When I managed to open the suit, I saw that was indeed alive, but injured. I pulled him out of the suit and got him back to our bunker. We managed to stabilize his injuries, and when the next supply of troops and ammo arrived, we managed to get a new XV-104 ready for him to pilot.
When the second assault on our position came, we were ready for it. When I saw it was the same monstrosities I encountered recently, I paled. This would be the day we die.
This is Shas’nel Bork’an Istrazivac adding a final note to Shas'nel Sa'cea Voda’s entry involving our resource mission on Q-21. The battle that ensued on our position went horribly wrong. The creatures came down on us and Shas’nel Voda gave several orders that I questioned to myself throughout the encounter. He ordered everyone to fire on these strange, small manta ray creatures initially, instead of disabling the larger ones that were steadily approaching. We did as ordered, and killed all of the creatures as they flew at Shas’vre Vior’la Svjez. It seemed a waste of time and energy. The larger creatures moved ever closer and Svjez engaged the six-legged creature, overcharging his Fusion Blaster and getting off two shots. He managed to blow off a leg, but that proved to be minimal effect when the creature managed to continue easily. One Skyray fired its full battery at the obese creature, again, minimal effect. I could see the panic building behind Shas’nel Voda’s eyes. I have seen it often from when we dealt with creatures such as these in our history together and even still in our current days. This is not what warriors should see of their commander. When Svjez was engaged in close combat by the insect-like creature, the clawed arms of the upper torso tore the suit’s limbs off and I could tell that Svjez himself was alright, since none of the attacks were even aimed at the torso of the suit. Voda, however, just seemed to become more frightened. Without the XV-104 in service any longer, our situation was grim. In his panic, Voda ordered the Skyray that still had its battery to fire on the creature before us, accomplishing nothing against the hardened metal-flesh of the creature. When the slow behemoth broke through a wall in the ruins nearby, we all quickly fired upon it, including the Skyrays and the Kroot that had hid on the battlements above us. We managed to wound it several times, proving to me that if we had started with this course of action sooner that we may not have been in this predicament. The large clawed creature launched its fire on the Kroot, killing many of them and forcing them to retreat. It then tried to assault the bunker itself, I’m guessing it thought that the bunker was a force of itself. When it wasn’t capable of doing much at all against it, it seemed to grow tired of the fight. When I looked past the creature, I noticed smaller feminine creatures moving quickly behind it. They seemed to be after a strange item in the area. I superseded my command position and communicated to the Skyray captain of these demons’ goal and he acknowledged, racing forward and attempting to destroy these creatures before they get away. I was, however, too late in my communications. The creatures retrieved whatever object it was and faded back into the shadows from whence they came. Irritated at the continued incompetence of Shas’nel Voda against these forces due to his overpowering fear of them, I turned to him and demanded an explanation of his delay in reacting to the threat. When it was all that he could to look at me in his panic, I recognized the troubled mind behind those eyes. I apologized to my old friend and it broke my heart. For this mission to succeed and Shas’o O’Shaserra to receive her much needed resources, Shas’nel Voda will have to be relieved of his position. I charged a pulse canister and quickly raised my rifle to my shoulder and fired a single shot at point blank. When his body collapsed inside the bunker, I discharged the canister and ordered the Fire Warriors to give him a funeral with all respects to rank. I ordered them to do every honor correctly or suffer a reprimand to their record for not following an order of the strictest importance. For the Greater Good.

Providing Security on Q-21: 4271st cycle of the Ethereal’s Reign

With the area properly secured and the arrival of Shas’o O’Shaserra imminent, we were on full alert. When a unit of Blood Angel Marines was reported to be advancing towards us, I wasted no time in readying our forces. As they came in range, The Skyrays were ordered to fire all ordnance at the squads closest, while Shas’vre Svjez assisted with the largest of the groups. The Fire Warriors and I shot a full canister at the squad approaching from around a ruin in front of us. When our initial strike was over, only a handful of these Blood Angels remained, with one of their vehicles attempting to flank us. The one who appeared to be their leader charged Svjez, who responded by firing his Ion Accelerator and scoring a solid hit to the marine, who shrugged it off, even as he bled through his armor. While they clashed, we fired on the remainder of their forces, while their vehicle continued to fire at the Kroot, who I had sent off ahead of us, to draw fire. Finally, Svjez managed to crush the small Blood Angel’s skull in and moved on, quickly advancing ahead in order to ensure no further forces would be arriving. In the meantime, the closer Skyray moved into position and fired at the weaker side armor of the vehicle, wrecking its side and rendering it unresponsive. Even after a fair amount of time had passed while Svjez scanned the area, the vehicle remained smoking, but when he returned, Svjez fired with his Fusion Blaster one more time for good measure, slicing the barrel of the weapon and cutting the hull in two. Just in time as our communications node in our bunker rang out with orders to make the landing site clear. Shas’o O’Shaserra was finally arriving to lay claim to our prize. The transmission ended with a congratulations and a promise for a healthy reward to myself for discovering this cache. It tasted bitter in my mouth.
