Warhammer 40k Escalation Article Review and Play tested by SMG's Chaos Pat

Post  Hinkel on Wed Dec 11, 2013 8:58 pm

So, escalation is out, and everyone says the sky is falling, but the people that are saying this have not tried it out yet, but i have. Escalation as a whole is a very good supplement, and it adds a moderately competitive edge to less than spectacular armies such as orks and tyranids.

All the imperial guard tanks are amazing for their points value, the ork and chaos super heavy are okay for how much they cost, the tau super heavy is terrible, the tyranid and space marine ones are good, the eldar and dark eldar one is amazing, and the necron ones are generally average across the board,  but just like a landraider they still die to melta guns. I want to stress that point, EVERY SINGLE SUPER HEAVY WILL DIE TO MELTA GUNS, on average taking about 6-9 melta shots to kill the ground based ones, and autocannons will glance all but the imperial guard tanks to death.

D-weapons are not as broken as people think. Sure, each weapon that has them will kill 1-2 units a turn, but considering how much these units cost, they need to kill that many to be cost effective.

The average non-deathstar unit is about 200pts, so that means for the most part every super heavy will need to kill a unit a turn, consistently, for two and a half turns to earn its points back. Thats a major accomplishment if one of those survives past round two against a smart player.

Another fun fact is your opponent gets an amazing warlord trait table if you use a super heavy, which has all sorts of options that make super heavies cry.

I believe with all my heart that tournaments need to use escalation, why? because many armies can get a 2+ re-rollable invuln unit in thier army, which is virtually unkillable with most armies, but d-weapons kill it without a sweat, sure we trade one evil for another, but superheavies can at least be killed, quite easily.

So in conclusion, D-weapons are overrated because the points cost of the model they are on is ridiculous, super heavies die to melta guns and being glanced to death,

tournaments should allow escalation, and they are generally all overpriced and not worth their points, this includes the revenent titan. The closest ones to being cost effective are the guard tanks, but even then would you rather have one baneblade, or a squad of leman russes?

WARHAMMER 40K ESCALATION ARTICLE REVIEW AND PLAY TESTED BY SMG'S CHAOS PAT

Post  Necron on Sun Dec 15, 2013 11:27 am

Reposted from GnG/MU Facebook thread:

Nothing new here, Just need to start playing........

Dan Henderson ...... Having seen this game evolve over 35 years, I have watched as rules, new units, and cosmic capabilities have been added. Some come and some go but in the end the new stuff is added. You all know how today everyone screams foul at Forge World rules (not the models but the rules) I think JDV call it " Purist" Well let me tell you from 89-99 "Forge World" was fully integrated models and rules into Warhammer 40K GW even directly licensed to a WOS ... Epicast and introduced the Monstrous Creature for the first time into the "Purist" 40K world. Up until then, there were only creatures, GW through Epicast introduced the next level of game "Escalation". For 10+ years or so Forge World has fallen out of favor. Now that is changing. GW is adding in Gar Creats and D-Weapons. Forge World is in favor as GW is issuing FW rules in GW books. ..... APOC...Escalation.... It is just a cycle and I say bring it on. Just consider the last two years. Today we play with Fortifications, Flyers, fighters and bombers, .....in 40K????? Who would have thought that possible 2 years ago. When they put D-Weapons on the table, GW will reintroduce displacement and re-fractor fields. Never fear true to form GW only makes a faction unkillable for a short time. Then they move on, play off the revenge card, and sell mo stuff!!! Bring on the new (old) stuff... I have 2 Harridan's ..... Never shy away from adding to the game... Complain a little... Embrace the new stuff, look forward to the next level... after all, It is a fun game that can hold your attention for years and years ..... and yes when you are as old as I am .... you always vote for a painting requirement. Always vote for a painting requirement

After listening to the 11th co review of escalation, they and their guests agree it is broken. Titans in a tournament, wow, never could have imagined it. 40k is becoming less and less fun. Unpainted armies, proxies, Super death stars, more random charts, fliers, unbalanced codices, and now titans, gargantuan monsters, and super heavies in a regular tournament games? I think I'm going to hold onto my stuff until either GW gets bought out or another rulebook comes out and then decide on whether or not to dump my stuff.

But if you listen to the Independent Characters Podcast on Escalation and Stronghold Assault they were the exact opposite. They were positive about it and the people that have tried it out " not just escalation but stronghold as well" had fun with it just like about 4-5 of us that have tried it out down here as well. Have you even tried it out? I just say don't hate it till you try it, cause so far all of us that have tried it liked it. You said 40k was becoming less fun, well i hate to hear that...cause that is all the game is really meant for. Well hopefully things work out in 40k for ya, i always hate to see people leave the hobby

thats all i ask for is fun.
,and i personally talk to dan before, he is responding for what i had said in the store in jaks.
i told him i like the big bugs, n big tanks, and big walkers, and some of the fortification, then i imput that i strongly did not like d weps
with a passion
i had notatation to myself. first time i saw d-wep in tourney. i would drop n pack it up not play unless its for casual gaming .
its getting to where a casual player is not gonna play at all, feel to it now
srry if this offend some, but this is how i feel about and also i not gonna imput more into this
so thx for the forum and info
