Im gonna do it!!!!
Ok, because of my job its possible Uncle Sam is gonna move me in May. I'm cool with this, with the exception of some unfinished business. See, I've never been to a big tournament. I've spent hours thinking of how to make a display board, army lists, and rules discussions. I feel like of I got moved now I'd be leaving the SMG group without reaching my full potential. If I do get moved somewhere, I'm planning on starting a similar club to keep things going, but I'd like as much experience as possible before it comes to that. So, I'm going to be keeping tabs on my progress, and record after thoughts after the tourny in Ft Walton Beach. I've got a display board I'm gonna put together, objective markers to make, and about 500 pts to paint. Also, I'm going to try and be in the top 50%. I'd like to say top 25%, but since its my first I think top half is a reasonable goal. Oh, and ill be playing my GK.

Good luck with that tourament man...
Sorry to see you'll be leaving soon....
my army isn't all the way painted(Don't like to be rushed), don't have a display board, don't have an army carrying case, and I wouldn't like to bring Necrons... It would be more like dark eldar which isn't finished at all with buying them, but I'm working on getting them finished.... So I have many projects going on atm..

Do you know where you might be going? Good luck with the tournament. That's a part of the game I just can't get interested in. For me, tournament play is too limiting. I like the idea of a road trip with 40K waiting at the end of it, but tournament lists are not for me. I prefer my army to include everything that is available for it instead of multiple identicle units optimized to win games.

Yeah 40k is starting to turn into the thing I left magic for. All these people grabbing online lists without fielding what they want to which isn't fun. Back when I played magic I was that guy that grabbed something that no one else ran because of this. I'd get reactions like, "Who brings that to the table?" or "Who runs that?". I've been the guy that thinks outside the box that way.

Ironically a lot of the most successful lists aren't the internet lists

I know... I was just using how magic is now with internet as an example. Wasn't saying anything bad at big tournaments or our club. Just read about some big tournaments that are all the same lists which is ridiculous.

My only concern is that to be competitave at a tournament, an army needs to be built a certain way and I'm too interested in seeing how different units work instead of worrying about what units will win the game. The fun for me is hanging out with friends and pushing plastic armymen around the table. Being competitave is last on my list and is backed up by my never having actually won a game.

I get your point.... I don't care if I win or lose its still a good game as long as friends are around to enjoy it with, but there is just a gene in my body that wants to take those people that brag alot of their prowess in anygame down a knotch by beating them senseless in it. Happens to me in First person shooters alot and has happened a time or two in 40k. Guess it's my competitive streak amongst my enjoyment of the background fluff.
Like someone else told me before though. "It's not fun winning all the time because then no one will play against you. Also win or lose have fun." Quote from my dads many rules when he taught me how to play on a pool table. Has nothing to do with 40k, but still good analogy to use.
