Hi, My Name Is Chad Knight and I am a Win At All Cost Player! (WAAC Story)

I am Chad Cornelius Knight (CKO) and I am a Win at all cost player! I acted like a jerk to people in certain situations rule disputes, conversations about the game, on forums, at Ard Boyz (specifically one year a story that you will hear) all because I wanted to win at all cost. I wanted to be the best 40k player in the world and I wanted to be recognized for it.

I think I became a WAAC player because of my experience at my first Ard Boyz. I had just became comfortable playing 40k and I was winning more than I was losing but I still was considered a baby, but despite that I was able to win my first Ard Boyz tournament! When I told my parents about it my dad saw how excited I was about Ard boyz and told me that if I won he would pay for the trip to Chicago, needless to say I was excited.

My guru and I drove for two hours to the 2nd round location where we meet up with some familiar players from different states. After greetings, we started playing and I was able to win my first game. I then had to play my guru the person that has destroyed me more times than I can remember and I do the impossible I beat him! I could not believe it, I concealed my joy, but it was a giant step to me, I was no longer an apprentice!

I was the only one who was undefeated, I had max points in both games the tournament was mine to lose. I was nervous and playing against Tyranids(previous codex) I knew nothing about them but my guru gave me some pointers and I was confident that I could at the least, tie. I started the game thinking tie or better and on the last turn I flew my vendetta next to the objective to tie the game, I thought I had won the 2500 point army!

He pointed to a hormagaunt that was on the second floor and ask me to move my vendetta a little so that it was one inch from it and I did, but I still was within range of the objective but he wanted a judge to come verify. At this time my vendetta was suffering from wobbly model syndrome and the judge had to take it off the stand to get a better look. To make a long story short I was off by 1/3 of an inch and, I lost the game and did not place!

I was furious mostly at myself because I had been cheated by the player. Hormagaunts in the previous codex were beast, and beast cannot be on the second floor, so he would not have claimed that objective either. He was also taking cover saves with his monstrous creatures because they were behind the hormagaunts, however monstrous creatures follow the 50% cover save rule similar to vehicles. If that hormagaunt wasn’t on the second floor my vendetta would have never had to move. If he wasnt given cover saves my vendettas would have smoked his monstrous creatures and it would have most likely been a massacre. I became a WAAC player that day because I never wanted to have that same feeling again.

I didn’t realize I was a WAAC player until I read a friends of my post which basically said, “I love my army”. I got to thinking do I love my army, and the answer to my question was no. I only loved winning not playing the game but winning. I now realize that by being so concerned with winning and only enjoying winning I was missing something. What ever I was missing is/was holding me back and preventing me from being the best player I can be.

I then asked myself why don’t I have the same love as my friend. The only answer I could conjure is that I didn’t assemble and paint my own models! I have decided that if I want to be the best player in the world, I have to love everything about 40k, and that includes painting and assembling my own Necron army, despite my extreme dislike of those two activities.

I feel like I will become a better player by learning to love the other parts of the hobby. Why do I believe painting and assembling my Necron army will correlate with more wins? Its because if I paint and assemble my Necron army I will have more pride in it, and thus play harder. Secondly, I will love seeing and playing with my Necron army I have painted myself increasing my enjoyment of the game. Since I will enjoy the game more I will play more games thus gaining more experience. Those are the two benefits I can think of, and I am sure that I will discover more of them as I create my Necron army!

Fluff players enjoyment comes from a variety of 40k activities while a WAAC player can only enjoy winning. I no longer will be a WAAC player instead, I will be a player that loves every aspect of the hobby that happens to love winning at tournaments. If I ever play you the reader, know that you face an enemy who’s love for the game wills him to play better. If you beat me I hope it is because you also have a love for the game, and not because you are a WAAC player.

thats what im talkn bout. !!! grats cko !!! u cant enjoy a game if u dont love the whole thing dont lose sight of ur goals and keep it true

like me i lost soooo many time well lets stop infinite numbers. heheh till i found an army that works for me like my deamons till GK came out kind of put a damper on them, so i went to my favorite army again after i finally found a way to win more with the orks

now goals here what i mean i remember someone told me horde[orks] will not work, everyone play the trukks army ,so I blantinly told him i will play the horde army and make it work and show u it will and by god i did but i had to put in alot of playing and hard work and the funny part about it when playing with my orks found out , I shoot better with them oiks hehe then i do with any other army i play

ive alway been a fluff player never a waac player but there is always a two side of the coin with the same idea

play WH40 OR WH FANT to have fun with the enjoyment of playing the game

I don't think I've ever won a 40K game, but that doesn't stop me from keep collecting and growing my armies. Like you, I need to chain myself to my painting table and just do it.

I understand what your going through chad.... I went through the same phase whenever I just got into this game 3 years ago. I got into this game after watching Sean for about a year play games at Jaks. I was playing against my friends here around my place with space wolves. Got cocky and went agains a veteran player with my space wolves and had my but handed to me really, Really, hard... Actually tabled me..... It hurt my feelings at first, but that's probably the point where I turned into a brand new player because instead of quitting I wanted to learn anything and everything there is to know about 40k... Thus it became my obsession. I now have every codex there is out in this game. I turned my photographic memory to good use by trying to find out everything about my enemy I could. I found out my play style isn't for the loyalist marines cause I didn't enjoy collecting them. In finding that out... I made a mistake that new players really make. I like being the bad guy in this game through the storylines. Been using Dark Eldar, Necrons, and when Chaos Legions come out will use them. The truth is I proxied for years after I started getting wolves until finally I found what I liked. When my friend quit 40k and gave me the necrons I was playing them for about 3 months before the new codex. Enjoyed every minute building and painting them. I don't like painting flesh colors thats probably why I like necrons so much.

I understand that winning is like a drug and losing is a humbling experience from what I've found in life.
Just remember it's a game man and keep stroking even if you lose. That's what I do.. When I lose I look on it as a learning experience and I don't get mad. I say good luck to you man on this new path and I welcome you as a fellow brother on this path.

Honestly, there is no greater feeling then putting an army down that you painted, having people comment on how good it looks, and then doing well with it. It takes it to a personal level. When you paint your own stuff, you imagine how it'll look on the field, how many enemies it's gonna kill, and what kind of cool kill markings you have. Another thing to do is name your guys. The generals usually are named, but when Purifier Abacus snuck up behind one of martinos Tervigons, activated his deamonhammer, and Insta killed the tervigon, it put a lot more feeling into the game. I think by taking this course of action you will find that you are satisfied on a whole new level compared to what you were experiencing. So, I'll just say this......Welcome to the line in the sand.
