The following Chaos Titan is currently for sale on eBay:

A little 40k history ChaosTitan

I sent an e-mail to my 40k friends out in California asking if it was one of the old Forgeworld USA models and I got the following e-mail today:

Yep, designed by Mike Biasi(sp) approved for production by Forge World Models of Modesto CA, under international license by Games Workshop Ltd. U.K.

Probably the stupidest thing I had ever done, except for that big breasted, barely legal exotic Turkish Dancer (read- hooker) in Istanbul in 1972....

Our e-mail discussion with John Richardson about the origins of Forgeworld continue with this reply from John today:

NO. We did not buy the moulds. Here is how that worked. Games Workshop OWNED the intellectual property rights. Armorcast, Biasi or Forge world owned NOTHING. We had permission to take anything from Biasi and Armorcast that was under license from Games Workshop and create our own moulds. In other words we simply took a model, cleaned it up, made a master and then made moulds. We were then asked to submit our outer recreations of Epic sized vehicles for approval, the same process was followed. What Armorcast or Biasi did not understand is not only everything we did was legal but in turn they could have taken what we created and apply for a license to reproduce or pieces also.

They were so wrapped up in claiming that they owned this and that, that they never bothered to ask if the sword cut two ways. None of the designs or vehicles belonged to anyone else other Games Workshop.

It was a fucking joke, we offered Biasi a huge cut if he would help us, he simply did not understand how much money he might have made since GW allowed us to make that offer but it was against their (GW's) better judgement since nothing brought up form Epic scale actually belonged to Tim or Mike anyway. Mike declined, we went ahead and followed our contract and paid our fees exactly as GW required.

During this time, learned a lot about International Law and Intellectual Copyright Laws. This allowed us to sign a contract with Target Games to produce WarZone vehicles also.

To be fair to Mike and Tim, they did break the ground for the whole deal, but we knew that in the long run the production and sale of these resin items were doomed to be taken over by GW. Both Forge World and Armorcast demonstrated the need and want for 40K sized vehicles, hence my contract with Target, realizing that there would be an end to GW allow us to produce.

Now the name Forge World is not a term coined by Games Workshop, but Robert Heinline(sp) in one of his books. However once the contract was over, GW did ask if they could use the name Forge World for their new plastic authorization, since I had the rights to producing the same in plastic injection also. I was told "You have demonstrated that there is a market, we have the sales numbers for your vehicles, your name is already well know around the US and Europe, we feel that GW will benefit from an already established company name."

I signe and agreement that they my do so if they so desired, but it was a year or so before they actually secured the name and started production, not sure who owns Forge World now, if it is an off shoot or actually GW, I do not know, since I no longer play.

I am not sure if Nick Tomkins has any GW designs, but Nick really did the best job of all of us by keeping his production low and of high quality. He was a great help with advice, a very cool guy. Sadly all Tim and Mike did was bad mouth us simply because they did not understand the legalities of the contracts. Not sure what happened to Mike, he was a skilled artist and a damn good sword maker too.

Well, after chatting with John about the early days of Forgeworld, I had to bid on the titan and now I own it!
