Help with Transfers

This is something I've always wondered about in my experience with 40k... How do you go about applying transfers on a curved surface like a shoulderpad for marines. Do you have to cut them a certain way?

split the top of the transfer just a hair...use an exacto as I tried with small scissors and failed miserably

Then put a coat of gloss varnish on top to seal it down.
