Terrain issue at jaks

Post  Orikl on Fri Dec 30, 2011 7:55 pm

I am unhappy with the currently used house rules at jaks. Specifically the one "all area terrain is a 4+" i chalked this down to the confusion with the many different terrain pieces you deal with. with that said here is a diagram and some explanation of how terrain works. Examples including Building and area terrain peices.

yeah the terran issue at jaks I've tried to bring up back whenever I first started bringing 40k... but jaks tournaments aren't all the way played by the book as you can see. Hills especially people are like it's area terrain which is 4+ the same as a building to them... So in actuallity we've all been playing wrong in the first place..

My issue with the terrain is it looks shabby and most of it is terrible.... as for the rules its a house rule as it was explained to me.

Most of that terrain was donated to jaks I think.

I'm just thinking of all of those games I could have won if that house rule wasn't there over the years.... Twisted Evil

Post  mouser04 on Fri Dec 30, 2011 10:58 pm

well the terrain is and was donated to him by other store or stores he bought out[buying warham/40k stuff from the store that is selling out]

we all know the rule for the building and other terrain just made house rule ineffect to keep it simple 4+ other between the two oppossing player make a decision on what the terrain is gonna be before we play

get with carl and he'll fill you in on what is what or get with everyone at the tourney and decide as a club group decision as we all did in the past

all terrain being a 4+ breaks many aspects about the game such as charecters with stealth being able to stand on a small hill and claim a 2+ cover....and the list can go on

I could say something else about tournaments at jaks, but I don't want it to get back to sonny so I will be banned from jaks.

I want to see if sonny would allow me to take a terrain peice home n work on it n bring it back better! Smile make terrain that makes more sense and is easily judged as to what the rules of said terrain should be. Instead of a "hill" that counts as a wooded area and buildings that look good! Smile

Well the chart he wrote out above simplifies it from the core rule book... the book we are supposedly playing this game by ya know... I haven't had problems with people saying the terrain that's a hill having a 4 plus cause we state at the beginning what everything has before playing... Like place the hill and say it's trees and so on

A. Jaks doesnt have bunkers
B. Jaks mostly has ruins
C. No one wants to complicate the game
D. No one wants to play games with multiple bunkers
E. I agree in some scenarios the cover save should be a 5+

F. ITS NOT THAT BIG OF A DEAL!

We weren't bringing up spamming bunkers everywhere dude or complicating the game so ya need to calm down. It's just a calm cool and collected discussion. He was mainly talking about the 4+ cover on a hill I believe man... What I said in my last post clarifies that as it is from my experience most of the time people put a hill down and says its trees which is 4+ cover anyways so I have no problem with that so that covered their discussion about what they said about it supposed to be different. Usually during all my games with the guys down there is like that clarify what the terrrain save is beforehand so no surprises.

What you said about the 5+ save on some terrain I kinda agree with as well, but the only way I see anyone wanting to place a terrain that's 5+ cover is if forced to during a scenario which doesn't likely happen cause who would want the 5+ over 4+?

From what I gathered also they where talking about sprucing up some of the terrain at jaks... make it look better... which I believe overpowered the original post of this thread. Which they agreed that the terrain looks rough or slapped together.... Which I have to agree with them the terrain does look kinda rough, but playable. I've also seen other peices of terrain that never been used in the games either.. Which some look pretty fun.

I just want the terrain to look uniform. For me, it adds to the gaming experience if the table and armies on it look like a unified force. If they are all grey plastic thats okay but when every model is painted differently the least you can do is primer them all.

How many trees does a "Forrest" need? There should be a point where it is represented but still allows models to be placed in it.

My home table has 2 bastions, 1 Fortress of Redemption, a bridge and a few out buildings with some pipeline. I need/want some hills and woods. Maybe a river.

The guy used the word "house rules" implying that we are playing differently from other places. The only problem with that is we go to GTs every year and they play it exactly the same, so its not a Jaks thing its a 40k thing. The op is correct about how buildings should work but for some reason the gaming community not just Jaks but the entire community, chose not to use those rules unless its some special mission or it is clearly a bunker.

Well he probably didn't know this.... I know I didn't because I never left our little community in the 3-4 years of me playing so far like you tournament going fellas has. I just simply can't afford it yet in my life.... So I assumed that was the house rules at jaks as well and didn't tell him different.

Re: Terrain issue at jaks

Post  Orikl on Sun Jan 01, 2012 11:59 pm

1. there are three bunkers i can think of at jak's along with several buildings that are big enough to follow the "building" rules.
2. a 4+ is just to much it essentially gives "stealth" tagged characters power armor...
3. ok so with your logic everyone should throw out pages in a rule book to "simplify" a game. Rolling Eyes
4. I am going to be in the process of making new terrain for club use. i would rather not spend an exorbitant amount of time adding details. I.e. rocks, woods, barrels, etc if it isn't going to be utilized. i could save several hours of time and plenty of cash ignoring those rules... but again we are doing just that ignoring rules.
5. i have watched and read hours of info on tournaments. not once i have even seen any mention of all terrain being considered 4+ area terrain. i could be wrong.
6.i would be upset if i attempted to make a move that the "BRB" says is legal and was not allowed because its "complicated"
7. and last but not least the buildings have the specific rules simply because its war... it has and always will be a valid tactic to destroy buildings and what not if A.) troops are garrisoned b.) if its in your way...

This is somewhat of a moot point on the 4+ since you can just discuss with you opponent what terrain will give in respect to saves before the game. Bring out your BRB as justification as appropriate. Problem one, solved. Problem two, solution. Bring your own terrain if you'd like. I've already done so myself.

I can see what yall are saying yes the terrian is rough and shabby. But the only reason alot of it looks thrown together is because all of it is like 10 to 15 years old and over that time kids will come in and mess them up so we have actually gotten tired of bring new stuff in to get messed up, we all would love to have new terrian.

Yes some of the house rules are different but i dont complain because i go down there to have fun not to be a but about everything. So why is it such a big deal about the terrian rules it is like that to keep it simple and thats all.

Sorry so late

Post  AArdvark085 on Mon Jan 02, 2012 5:41 am

Sorry to be so late on this topic I've been a little busy. The bottom line on terrain at Jaks is this: Prior to each game you should discuss the armor save and type of each terrain piece. If you agree that a certain structure will follow the building rule or the rubble rule so be it! If a piece of terrain counts as area terrain assign it the appropriate save as outlined in the BRB. Agree before each game and play on! The point is to have fun not stress out! I know that Patrick and several others use the building rules all the time as a matter of fact....

As for house rules I've never seen a book of house rules or FAQ's so each game is up to the two players to decide what kind of game they wish to have. If we would like to establish a book I'm sure Sonny wouldn't mind as long as no one bickers. In fact we could set up a club FAQ if yall so desire.

Now for those of you who wish to donate terrain to the store I say great. However you should talk to Sonny first. As odd as it may seem he may not want your terrain due to storage limitations or whatnot. I have made a piece or two and left it up there but if everyone started bringing in terrain he would run out of storage space pretty quick. An alternative would be to build terrain and donate it to the club. Certainly it would not be at Jaks every weekend however it would be available for club events and I have a safe place for it to be stored so that it won't get all "Jak-ed Up" LOL (I kill myself). . .

Yet another alternative would be to come up with a few samples of terrain then approach Sonny about buying the material and the club supply the manpower to make the terrain. That way we are both gaining from the experience.
