Competitive gaming
The internets are full of posts defending and attacking competitive and campaign play. I am absolutely in the campaign camp. I'm just a non-competitive person in pretty much everything I do. For you tournament types out there, what draws you to the competitive side of 40K? I'll start. Tell me if I'm off base.
Pros: Get to play guaranteed number of games. Road trip with 40K waiting at the destination. Spend time with like minded people. Enjoy showing off an army you worked hard to build and paint.
Cons: Registration/travel/hotel costs can add up. Busy playing, can't wander around looking at everything. Competitive armies tend to be similar builds (I could be wrong about this, but it's been my experience reading about it.)

Re: Competitive gaming
Well I think I walk the line between the two cause I like being both competitive and being fluffy or campaign driven guy.... I never been to a major 40k tournament in my life, but want to go to one to test my abilities one day. In competitive side I think it's awesome going against new people and cracking skulls. Winning prizes is pretty good I'd think...... I want to have fun above all things in this game. I have fun in both winning and losing as long as my friends are around, but going against someone that only cares about winning isn't that great of a game. Also I'm the type of guy that if I where to play ultramarines.... I'd have to paint them blue.... Black legion black... etc... I guess my O.C.D. kicks in there. Also I'm compelled to create armys that I read about in the fluff.... I can't hlep it that I'm that way... My friend I play against I know gets frustrated cause I can't set my mind in on one army and stick with it.... There is my opinion on it from my perspective of the two put together...

yup
im lil in the casual playing more with fluff and hav minimized competitive feel to it
what i dont like is when im against someone who thinks that u got to win all the time and at all cost it kind of puts a fawl mood in the game experience and making it not fun anymore and got to critique everything
im here to have fun playing and enjoy it, not to play where you are not having fun
but everyone have their way of playing

I love the tactical part of the game. To me 40k is super chess with awesome stories. And I have found at tournaments people bring their A game and tactics become such a major part.

agree with the capn here, one of the reasons why i play the game, although i do like the casual side of it when i game with friends, get to mess with buddy's head while trying to kick his butt ingame

Re: Competitive gaming
I have an inner turmoil with myself... so I find myself on the fence between competitive and the campaign side of it... Guess its why I can't ever choose anything to stick to. Like 40k so far I've played every race except for tau, sisters, and dark angels.... simply because I can't make my mind up on anything when it comes to this hobby.. I'm sad to say that, but its the truth that I've been trying to correct about myself since I started playing this. I think I'm just going to be one of those guys when I get older that will have many races in this game. I guess it goes with my personality being a social shapeshifter.

I fall in the fluffy camp I think. IMO this hobby is at it's best in a prepared scenario type game. Sometimes these can be hard to balance the sides so competitive players can get abit frustrated. I love a good rescue mission, link up with a downed pilot or disabled vehicle crew. Taking out important objectives as a prelude to invasion etc. Also uneven battles can be fun, a small desperate force defending a fortified position against a horde! Good times.

Re: Competitive gaming
I enjoy both sides of them game. There is nothing better than doing well at a tourney and enjoying the experience because you have worked hard on your paint job /tactics and it paid off. Then there is the campaign side of the house. To me its like playing a game of football with your buddies and drinking beer at the house. You can have fun and not be so serious and relax a bit. But what I think is most important and was touched on is "like minded gamer's". So if I'm playing in a campaign then we are all having fun because that's what we came to do. If I'm at a tourney I play to win ( not that I'm all that good at it lol) and I feel like so is everyone there. That's why its fun to me. So at the end of the day I say do what it is you like to do! play to win or win by playing.

Re: Competitive gaming
^ this is true. I wish more people would say it though. Not be a jerk about it, but just be like "hey, ******* I know you get competitive, but you were kinda harsh that last game". I think that would help a lot more than talking behind peoples back, which I am guilty of myself.

I don't get mad at any game. It's just I'll be sportsman like to the enemy as long as he is sportsman like to me. I Ignore the ones that act unsportsman like.
