Painting my miniatures Empty Painting my miniatures

Tonight, I finally sat down with a miniature, some paints and brushes and put pigment to figure. I choose to do one of the plastic marines that comes in the Black Reach box set. It's not very detailed and has large flat areas that can be simply covered with color and left at that. My paint area is also my computer desk, so I opened up my web browser and navigated my way over to the Games Workshop page and looked up the article on painting Blood Angels (my marine army of choice.) It was very simple. Paint him red. Add some detail. Highlight. Done. I sat down at 10:00 p.m. with brush in hand and started to paint. By 11:30, something dawned on me that I had a sneaking suspicion in the back of my head but was now firmly confirmed. I. Can. Not. Paint. In 90 minutes, I was able to put on the worst base coat ever painted on a miniature. Had I simply purchased some red Krylon spray paint and shot it blindfolded, it would a.) look better, b.) have taken about 89.9 minutes less time and c.) made me not viscerally, passionately hate, hate, hate painting. It is physically impossible to put a non-blotchy coat of paint on a miniature. It can't be done. There will always be brush marks on it, regardless of how thick or thin the paint is. I am absolutely convinced that miniatures that appear in White Dwarf and the codex's are built to a 1:1 scale, painted in booths with spray guns and photographed to look miniature when they are not. I figure that to paint my Blood Angel army, it will take me roughly 15 days of being chained to my painting station loathing every second that I am wasting there trying and failing to paint an army. And that is not just two weeks of slapping on paint for a few hours each night. It would take me fifteen times twenty four hours to get my army painted to the worst looking painted army ever in the history of painted armies. I just hope I can find a fireworks stand that will be open tomorrow so I can buy the biggest rocket I can afford and send this awful failure away in a blazing fireball.

Foundation paints are wonderful. I know people don't like the GW paints, but I do. Also I would stay away from the Krylon Primer paints if you choose to spray. They are extrememly thick and will take out all the detail if you do. I'm going to be trying some airbrushing with Carl when he gets back from WGC, so maybe if you're free we can meet up and he can show both of us and see if that works any better, because when it comes do painting, base coats suck. Plain and simple.

Further down the spiral... I've slapped paint on another four marines. I hate painting. I can not paint. I can think of a hundred other things I'd rather be doing, but I sucked it up and sat down to give it another go. Step one, set up my painting area. Step two, drop one of the miniatures into my paint. Steps three through six were swear a lot, rinse off the paint and start over. Tonight, I said the heck with an even coat of paint. I was going for speed. In an hour and 15 minutes, I managed to poorly paint one squad red. Just red. No other colors were harmed in the painting of those miniatures. Tomorrow, more red and maybe, just maybe, some yellow and gun metal silver. Painting, I hate you.

I'm still at it. I have one 5 man squad painted up now and they are terr-i-ble! I have started putting my paint about 8 inches away from me after I dropped another one in the paint. My current skill level is equal to a 5 year old that has had a six pack of Redbull. I am changing my chapter from Blood Angels to the Night Train because it looks like I was drinking that stuff when I painted them.

Next squad is ready for painting (ruining?) I'm going to prime this bunch white and see how that goes. I'm thinking it may help the base coat look a little more even this time around.

I've taken the last week off of painting. Those models in the corner are mocking me now. Sheesh, can't catch any slack from them when I paint them, and get dirty looks when I leave them alone.
