Tournament Development Thread: I need your in-put
Ok I know I've stated this before but one of my personal goals which is shared by many in the club is to host a larger tournament in line with something like Coastal Assault. I am in the "Brain Storming" phase of putting together a large tournament and I need your input. I have posted some questions below and I need your creative answers.
Do you think the club should organize a tournament?
Should we host a one or two day tournament?
What point limit should we set?
Do we have the core knowledge to run other game systems suchs as WarHammer Fantasy or Warmachine?
Would you want to play in the tournament or help with the staffing.
How will we gather enough terrain to fill up 25 - 30 tables?
Our tournament will be a competative event which appeals to most players however if we have room should we run a narrative event for the people who prefer non-competative gaming?

Two day is a bit ambitious. If we do this as a club, we should run it, not play in it. We have the knowledge to run 40K, Fantasy and Warmachine. A narrative game is a good idea. I don't think terrain will be an issue.

I would say one day, as for.terrain, I am sure between everyone we could come up with enough.

I've heard rumors that Jaks wants to do something similar. Is this in line with them, or is this strickly a SMG thing?

Strictly S.M.G. I talked to Sonny who is going to organize a two day tournament he wants to do it as a Jaks only event. He only ask that we help set up the tables and play. So we will host an event of our own that wont compeat directly with the Jaks tournament. I think this is a better move so that we dont have to co-mingle our terrain and we can organize the tourney the way we want. In the long run this is a better plan.

Do you think the club should organize a tournament? Yes
Should we host a one or two day tournament? One day for the first go
What point limit should we set? 1850 or 2000
Do we have the core knowledge to run other game systems suchs as WarHammer Fantasy or warmachine?
I know there are plenty of fantasy players, so if we did a two day maybe run 40k on sat fantasy on Sunday?
Would you want to play in the tournament or help with the staffing. I would love to play as Im not perfect on the rules still, but I would say that at the min we should require people to have an army list codex and current FAQ for their army or we could build an FAQ book.
How will we gather enough terrain to fill up 25 - 30 tables? I'm about to get a garden of moor and an Aquila defense line but I'm sure there is enough terrain between you and grots life. Then there is everyone else lol
When would you try to do this?

A tournament hosted by a local gaming group. Please, that will never work. You might as well just go to a big one that's already established instead of staying local. And the next time you see a guy at you FLGS you should punch him because his army is cheesy, no matter what codex it's out of, and stop writing stupid articles. What do you think, support my small ego or argue with me so I can support my small ego.....
Whoa, what just happened. I remember reading articles on BOLS and then waking up here, lol!!!
Anyway, I think it's a great idea to start our own little event. We need to leave a good amount of time between the two as both will likely be costly by the time we include rental places, since I'm sure we need a place bigger than Carl's house. We should get together in the next club meeting and discuss a lot of this in person where we can write down ideas and bounce them around faster than typing.

What is the goal? We need to define our objective inorder to measure our performance, as of now it seems we do not have an objective. I think the club should organize a tournament as long as we all know what we are trying to accomplish.
AArdvark085 wrote:

This all goes back to the main problem of not having a goal. I think our goal should be to eventually have a tournament that has national appeal to 40k players. I know we want to use other game systems but goals should be kept simple if we can accomplish this one goal it will allow us to branch off into other areas alot easier. The 40k tournament should be a one day tournament, but we should have other events on the second day to test the waters to see how many people will stay and participate in other game systems.
AArdvark085 wrote:

Lets be different why not let the players decide! Everyone that registers early gets to vote 1850 or 2000 and lets say a month before the event we announce the point limit.

I am sure we do but we need a franchise player before you get the pieces to compliment him if you know what i mean.

I would like to be part of the staffing.

Group effort!

Our goal is to run a 40k competitive tournament that has national appeal that also attracts other gamers. Or something of that nature we basically need to write a mission statement and try our hardest to accomplish that goal, and each year we will get better untill hopefully we will have a weekend event that has national appeal comparable to others but until then we need to make our goal simple.

I agree with stuart. This thread is a good start, but our next meeting is where we should get concrete details and any questions settled. I'm willing to help orikl. I have a lot of high impact foam we can go to town on and I can learn a lot about terrain building from you. When is our next meeting by the way? lol

Re: Tournament Development Thread: I need your in-put
Let's make it truely unique. Set a different point limit. 1900, 2100, 1775, something no one else is doing. We want to establish ourselves as unique and great. We aren't gonna do that by copying the other main tournaments. We need flavor, spice, strippers, and stuff. Think about the Feast of Blades after party and how many reports talked about the fun they had outside the tournament.

how cool would it be to get one of the show rooms in one of the casinos? Then the after party would follow on without anything we would have to put together lol and there would be a hotel right there!

We could take bets on games if we do it at a casino too.

Yes to the strippers! Other than that this is my first tournament so I have no idea.
Do any of the tournaments do Team Battles?

Re: Tournament Development Thread: I need your in-put
Ok guys these are great ideas! So the next step we should take is to set up a club meeting to discuss these things in person. I think it would be prudent to establish a Tournament Committee to organize and oversee the event. That way we could break down the task and set metrics to measure our success. I will get with Stuart and figure out a date and location for the meeting to establish the committee.
Re: Tournament Development Thread: I need your in-put
Is this still being tossed around? If so, I'd like to help any way I can. As far as advertising, I'd recommend contacting other clubs near the area, like Mobile or New Orleans. They probably would love to participate in a tourney.

Yes, we still in the planning phase. Both Carl and I have been busy, but have faith in the emporer, we shall succeed.
